Forums - Gaming Discussion - PS3 wasn't a Late Bloomer, Neither was 360 and Neither will Wii U

*face palm*

And this, right here, is why this site is ridiculous.*

The games are not a "consolation prize", they are the *entire point* of the system's existence. Coming in first in units sold is *not* the grand prize, it should be the consolation prize, *if that*, because you don't play userbases, you, in theory (if you're sane), play *games*.

(This not being a sane world, however...)

*Oh yes, I get that this site fixates on sales, but please spare us all the lame justification why anyone would think sales #s are the primary measure of a system's success in the a player's eyes.

We talk primarly about sales here, in case you don't know. And I think it's quite impressive the ammount of games Ninty is putting out there for wiiu, even if it keeps selling so atrouciosly. That's why I'm saying it is a great consolation prize, to keep playing the games Ninty promised and are still releasing there even when WiiU's selling worse that Dreamcast.

...Let the Sony Domination continue with the PS4...

How can you say PS3 wasn't a late bloomer? It sold 32% better in 2008 over 2007 AND sold 8&% better in 2011 (14.7 million). While WiiU will likely never see Wii levels of success, it's very possible for WiiU to start selling 6 million units+ annually. In fact, since WiiU has been consistantly selling 100% better in 2014 oer 2013 (due to Mario Kart), I can say it will almost certainly sell 5+ million in 2014, and will likely sell better in 2015 with Mario Kart & Smash Bros giving a boost to sales for all 12 months.

While 5/6 million isn't crazy, it will put WiiU above Gamecube and if the generation lasts long enough, it could put it above Sega Genesis and N64.

Easily, look at the sales curve it was a pretty normal smooth curve quite evenly balanced. It made a pretty good start (a better start launch aligned than 360) climbed to a peak with a steady increase in sales, reached a plateau then started a steady decline. Nothing extra ordinary about it. Full year sales went 7.9M --> 10.5M(+2.6M) -->13.2M(+2.7M) -->13.7M(+.5M)-->14.3M (+.6M)-->11.9M(-3.4M)... basically a 3-2-3 pattern: 3 growth years, 2 plateau years, 3 decline years and we're done more or less. About the only thing you could say is a bit different is that it had 2 years at the plateau instead of 1 year. But that does not qualify for a late bloom. A late bloom is to have major growth in the 4th or subsequent years because first 3 full years on sale typically are all growth years. Wii U's 3rd full year (next year) should be another growth year.

I don't know why you thnk Wii Sports will do anything. None of the Wii motion games has got things moving to date and the more distance (time-wise) that is put between the major success years of Wii and Wii motion titles the more that market will forget that Wii even existed and will have moved on.

If selling 6 million a year at the year 4 and 5 mark is a late bloom then I'm afraid we're speaking different languages. 6 million consoles sold in a year isn't any sort of bloom, in my view.

Sounds good. I'm in.

The long term cold war is on.

Eh. I still think comparing anything like sales between 2 gens without putting it in context (like the market at the times and external factors like the mobile market or economic recession) is not the best way to go about any analysis but most other people here don't seem to mind so oh well, I guess.

Well it does tell you something has changed doesn't it? the remake of the ''highest selling game'' can't even get close to 100k

Bet reminder: I bet with Tboned51 that Splatoon won't reach the 1 million shipped mark by the end of 2015. I win if he loses and I lose if I lost.

PS3 did fairly well considering the cost of it. The PS3 slim and the price cut to £250 in 2009 did only great things for the system and it's done better since thanks to all the exclusives.

Its clear that price is important but not as much as brand otherwise Wii U would do far better as its already cheap.
360 did well the whole time

Prediction: Switch will sell better than Wii U Lifetime Sales by Jan 1st 2018

No reason to buy the remake when the original still works.

That logic, I didn't know you could play online with the original or use the pad like that

Who the hell is still playing the original Wii Sports anyway, lol. Let it go, 2006 was a long time ago.

Besides Wii Fit U is a full blown sequel with new mini-games that improves on the original in every way ... and it still sold like crap.

Wii Party U is nothing to write home about either, it just has inflated sales because it's been bundled with basically every Japanese Wii U since last October or so.

Mario & Sonic Olympics flopped on the Wii U also. That's three duds on top of Wii Sports Club bombing.

Motion gaming in general is fizzling out. Kinect Sports on XBox One flopped too and Just Dance declines every year.
