Seems Nintendo don't really need 3party. They fund some interesting games like Devil's Third or Bayonetta and Bayonetta 2.

Nintendo don't want the typical CoD audience, these type of gamers will never buy a Wii U. But they want the families and mature sophisticated gamers. The steadily rising Wii U sales seems to indicate that they get these gamers.

The Wii U does not need 40 mio sales to be a success. Nintendo earned more money with the gamecube than Sony with Playstation 2, mainly because Nintendo made the successful games of the console themselves.

Wow, I didn't know that Nintendo was the only one to target "mature sophisticated gamers."

Wii is nothing more than an anomaly, they caught lightning in a bottle once, good for them, but that audience is long gone playing on smartphones and tablets. Now it's back to basics and this little list shows you the real power of Nintendo franchises and what the future of Nintendo is going to be if it doesn't open up to 3rd parties and regain a chunk of the regular core market.

Gotta love this "Wii is an anomaly/fluke/doesn't count" nonsense that gets thrown around. Wii is no more anomaly than NES or SNES. Those three are what happens when Nintendo gets it right. N64/GCN/Wii U are what happens when they fuck up.

A lovely story.  How is N64 different from SNES?  How is Wii like SNES?

Wii and SNES were both intelligently managed, N64 not so much.

Eeh... I don't see it, but maybe that's because all the negativity got to me :/

Ok, so you're saying it's not about what the console is, but about how it's managed?

So if they manage well, they can make anything into a massive success like Wii?  I don't believe it.

The Wii sold so well because it was interesting.  For casuals the Wii was pure hype, and it looked like Nintendo managed it well and could do no wrong, but it was a ticking timebomb.  It wasn't as good to play as core supporters would like to believe, and it didn't create loyalty.

The old things that were interesting with Wii don't have the same value now, and Nintendo tried to create new interest with the gamepad but failed.  They have to manage what they have dealt themselves.  Core gaming Nintendo is back.  The Wii is gone, long live the U.

Design of a system is part of how it's handled.

And the Wii U's struggles are not the result of the Wii. They are the result of Wii U's confusing name, software droughts, awful marketing, poorly chosen first party offerings, and excessive price tag.

The Wii did not screw over the Wii U; the Wii U screwed over itself.

The PS3 and Xbox 360 were not later bloomers, the Wii just overshadowed them.
The Wii U hasn't necessarily peaked yet, since we don't have enough information, so rest assured it will start to sell better.
The problems that make the Wii U's outcome look grim are, in order of seriousness are, the sales of the console hitting a low baseline in its second year, the short life spans of Nintendo Consoles, and failing 3rd party support

Not to mention, its unnecessary to prove the Wii was an anomaly.

Yeah I don't know that the Wii screwed over the Wii U.  Maybe it did in some people's minds, but not for me.  I'm saying the Wii didn't build a loyal fanbase that was eager for more of the same.

Yes the Wii U screwed itself over in so many ways, so back to the topic why do we think it will bloom and beat the GC?  Or you're agreeing, Wii U is badly managed like N64 & GC, therefore don't expect it to do any better.

I don't know about beating GCN, it could still go either way, but I think it'll be a late bloomer (as in, its best sales are ahead of it) simply because at the moment it's too expensive, and it doesn't have Smash Bros yet. MK8 has showed that its baseline can be raised.

The Wii screwed over the Wii U's 3rd party support.

Poor to adequate sales on a 100 million user base is not going to translate well when that user base is cut by 2/3s, and 30million for the Wii U is unfortunately optomistic right now.

It wasn't necessarily the Wii's or Nintendo's fault, but it happened as a result of the Wii.
