"Nintendo launching a new platform with a 40-hour RPG? Who’d have imagined this in the days of Wii Sports?"

**FACEPALM**

When did Zelda become an rpg? I didn't receive that memo.

It's the attitude more than the specifics that are stupid. They are contrasting Xenoblade as a launch title against "the days of Wii Sports" when of course Nintendo was wholly devoted to the casuals and would never launch a new platform with a epic 40-hour anything. I can't speak for you, but to me it's very easy to imagine Nintendo launching a platform with a 40-hour RPG in the days of them launching a platform with a 40-hour action/adventure game. Zelda is not technically an RPG, but it leans in that direction at times, enough so that Monolith Soft has received credit for aiding with the development of the last couple of Zelda games.

This is a ridiculous mistake that I would cry revisionism over if I thought for a second the writer knew what he was talking about. Kohler would have been much better off comparing Xenoblade to the original 3DS (Pilotwings, Nintendogs+Cats) and Wii U (NSMBU, Nintendo Land) launch titles. Instead he took an unfounded potshot at 2006-2007 Nintendo, at a time when they were actually kicking ass. People don't want to remember Twilight Princess, Radiant Dawn, Metroid Prime 3, and Mario Galaxy all releasing within one year of each other.

I wonder where this guy got his "40 hour" figure from too, since according to How Long to Beat, even players who rushed through the game took over 50 hours. The typical playtime is closer to 70-80 hours. Anyway, Twilight Princess falls firmly in the 40-60 hour range, which is not too shabby.

Oh look, he's also misinterpreting Miyamoto's comments about passive gamers, a popular trend lately. GARME JURNALIZM

I feel very reluctant to upgrade. I feel as though they are going to release a new handheld in the next 2-3 year. That and I love my X/Y 3DSXL.

To be real, yeah that does suck. I mean i think anybody that purchased one awhile back doesn't mind as much cuz its literally new HW, but for those that just bought it..... Especially in japan where it is coming out in 6 weeks.

Its just like X1 consumers before the announcement of SKU less Kinect O.o

I booght a 3DS in 2011 and I mind to upgrade just to play a couple of new games, as long as they just release Xenoblade plus a couple fo minor games to make the new model more attractive I'm fine, but if this mean they won't support the regular 3DS anymore with major 1st party titles they have lost my support, at least for the next few years.

They're not stupid enough to stop supporting 45+ million users out of the blue. The N3DS will likely see more "ports" coming its way from the older generations for now.

I see a really, really mixed reaction to this in the so-called hardcore community.

All I see is a DSi-style situation, where games such as Pokémon Black and White 2 would take advantage of the DSi hardware when it can, but still be available for older DS models.
Of course, I don't see Xenoblade being available for the 3DS to begin with.

I hope so, but I'm not  too sure either, they've made some horrible decisions in the last few years. We'll see.

Nah, they'll continue to support both 3DS and N3DS. There will be at least a 50mil+ userbase for 3ds (excluding N3DS), and its not like Nintendo or every company will make it so N3DS is the only system to work for there games.

N3DS is to make certain games do alot better, especially with the amiibos. Monster Hunter + SSB is perfect for this system for example, many hardcore fans will upgrade for these games.

Beside Xenoblade and i think any GCN/Wii Ports will need this HW only. I think personally F Zero GX would be insanely perfect for N3DS for example.

I really dont believe Nintendo will do more than 20% of their games for exclusive pn the N3DS. Pokemon Would definitely benefit from the N3DS thougb. It needs that POWER :)

Even though i cant defend them for the past few years with bad decisions, i think since March/Aoril this year, Nintendo has been proving many fans/people that they are changing and for the better. I mean look at them recently!

~E3 was a major Success

~Better Nintendo Directs (thank god)

~MK8 DLC is amazing

~Bayo2 has Bayo1 included

~New 3DS Is a great piece of HW

Well nintendo has thrived on the casual market and I doubt that they will shift focus in such a manner. The handheld market is fundamentally different from the console market, nintendo's skill has been to identify that difference and make games designed for it like pokemon, Mario land series, HH specific zeldas, professor Layton etc.

Let's see if nintendo can find a hardcore base in the HH market, as historically they haven't been able to create one and compete in the home console sphere.

I agree with you on the WiiU so far, I'm very pleased with my purchase and Nintendo is doing well with 1st party content.

On the other hand I'm quite annoyed with 3DS, fist of all it was very expansive (before the price cut),  it had so far only 2 very good years of support (2012 and 2013), this year they had almost nothing for me, since I'm not a big Pokemon fan so I don't plan to buy another remake and while SSB looks great I plan to buy it on WiiU. Then, after a lukewarm year, they tell me I won't be able to play some new exclusive games if I won't spend an extra 150$, looks like the definition of bad decisions here.

Again, it's early to tell but if won't be able to play (for instance) the rumored Majora's remake or worse Metroid, I'm going to get really pissed.
