Forums - Gaming Discussion - Will New 3DS/3DS XL Boost 3DS sales?

In a couple of months there are going to be four 3DS hardware SKUs being tracked in Media Create. I wonder if Nintendo will discontinue the oldest model soon?

Personally i wouldn't, If it makes them some money per unit, i do a price cut for both 3ds/xl and then fade out just the 3ds and keep XL not being discontinued!

of course !it will attract new customers, but the biggest advantage it s the current installbase of 3ds,many of them will renew, especially those who own the original 3ds, who are 26m,imagine all of them bying new 3ds or new 3ds xl:P

It will boost the sales when it actually comes out. But they announced it too early. It will drop sales until it does come out.

Not sure.

I mean, don't people always say Wii U problem is marketing and that Nintendo can't just sit and hope that people will find about the console by themselfs?

If that is right, than how people will find out about a SKU on Japan, unannounced on the west. Maybe some forum readers, but with smash comming i think a lot of people may not care.

New 3DS + SSB = Profit = RIP Vita

Yes they will discontinue the original model soon, just look at the shipment numbers for it the last few quarters, virtually non existant which leads me to believe they have silently been phasing it out for awhile now.

3DS sells very little in Japan compared to the XL. I suppose if they cut the price it might sell better, but then just how much would they be making on each unit sold?

I would just drop the price of the XL (which is still selling very well), price the New 3DS roughly equal to the XL, and price the New XL where the XL used to be. Drop the basic 3DS price until stock runs out and don't re-stock. People who want the smaller size can buy the new one, encouraging faster adoption rate and thus a greater market for the New exclusives.

In the West it's even more dire, as with these two we'll have five 3DS models over here. They'll have to do something about that. They may consider discontinuing both the 3DS and the XL and replacing both with the New variants.

well they are starting to phase the original 3DS cause been awhile since i have seen a brand new one of those in stock anywhere and i bet the original XL will get the same treatment once these models come out.

I know some PS Vita owners that might be interested in the New 3DS ^^. But honestly, I think it will increase sales for a while and extend the 100 000 sku weekly baseline.

More than 200,000 the week of coming, possibily 300,000.

Honestly they should phase out all the old models in my view , they really do not need more market confusion than they already have with wii/wiiu (heck even ds/3ds still confuses some people) Its a shame because I bought the original 3ds, than an XL, and now I will buy this but I am not sure most people in the market are quite as dedicated as I am .
