ICE BUCKET FRAUD: ALS FOUNDATION ADMITS THAT 73% OF DONATIONS ARE NOT USED FOR ALS RESEARCH

Posted by Staff on August 28, 2014

We've been duped. America is filled with fun-loving and caring people. The viral ice bucket challenge has combined both our sense of responsibility to our fellow human with fun. And it has been fun! Who didn't love seeing Sarah Palin doused?

But wait? Ice Bucket Challenge donations are nearing $100 MILLION. Where is that money going?

According to the ALS Foundation, not towards ALS.

Over 73% of all donations raised are going to fundraising, overhead, executive salaries, and external donations. Less than 27% is actually used for the purpose we donated for.

According to the ECFA, a charitable watchdog, 27% of donations actually making it to the cause they are donated to is unacceptable. In fact, the ECFA won't deem a non-profit as a reliable charity unless at least 80% of donations make it to their intended projects.

Here's the breakdown of the ALS Foundation's Financials:

The ALS Foundation is a terrible organization to send your money.

If you decide to take the Ice Bucket Challenge, may I humbly suggest that you select a well-researched charity (on your own, no endorsements here) and send it to them.

I personally have written a check to a small organization in Texas which gives food to homeless children and teens.

And that's my thought for the day. Take it for what you will.

How embarassing; Just shows how easily it is to lead the American people since damn near all of us care more about the social status of this campaign than what their moneys actually doing. Nearly all of my friends on FB have posted videos of this JUST because it's become the "in" thing to do the past two weeks.

This is why charity fails to do it's job. But what i really don't get is how someone can get paid to work a charity, just what the hell?! Just greedy!

A similar thing happens when richer countries give aid, it's very rare for the country recieving the aid to actually use it for it's intended use.

There is no fraud occurring here. This is how most major charities operate.

This has nothing to do with ALS, it's to do with large charities. The person who runs British Red Cross earns £180k (apparently), to put that in perspective, the UK Prime Minister earns £143k (of course UK government wages are messed up as well, Police Chief earns more). We had an issue last year with this in the UK due to these wages of charities and they had to defend themselves. Oxfam said that they money they pay their COE is lower than they could get in the private firms but they have to earn it and their wages are usually earned as reward for earning the big bucks, charities get given the money so the money isn't meant to be a reward, the work is meant to be.

Hmm, pie.

32% going towards public and professional education on the subject

19% going to patient services for sufferers and their familys...

7% going to administration.

This is some pretty sensational writing you've found to link us Devilshark, I mean while it's true that only 27% is going directly to research into new measures to combat ALS only 7% is actually going towards the admin side of things... That's a whole 93% towards the cause which they're running under, not fraud.

the stupidity of some people xD

they just gave them money and people dont even know why or on what they will use the money for, its sheep following some trend because its cool.

Or people thought they were doing something nice and generous by spreading the word or donating themselves, only to be deceived.

You gotta be a little less cynical.

That pie chart does not seem unfair to me. 7% to pay people is not crazy within a charity and 14% for fundraising makes sense.

Patient services seems like a huge positive as ALS is very difficult to live with for the person or family. Not sure exactly what education means here, helping doctors or families manage ALS?

So, to me, it seems like 79% of the money is going to the cause with an additional 14% used to bring money in. We can argue over that 7% I suppose or how efficiently the other 93% is being used, but seems rather sensationalist to label it outright fraud.
