Forums - Nintendo Discussion - Pokken Tournament is a "competitive action" rather than a "competitive fighting game."

Ugh.

---

Message from Katsihiro Harada from Bandai Namco (Tekken, director and chief producer):

Tekken is a game in which controlling a character is brought to the limits while you can plan out different playing tactics. Our company’s present character action and animation systems are also built from that title’s cornerstone.

When controlling a character, the player gets emotionally involved: when dealing hits you feel uplift and when taking hits grief. The knowledge how to create those feelings, know-how called “Tekkenism”, is also utilized in this title’s Pokémon action.

The genre called “competitive fighting game” has nowdays narrowed to include just core players in many people’s minds, but originally, it was a popular genre with a wide and varying audience. In particular, rather than being a “competitive fighting game”, Pokkén Tournament is “competitive action” and returns to the roots of action games and competitive games. It is developed as “a game that many people can play”. “I’ll try it out it because it is Pokémon” kind of lighthearted play is possible. It is possible to play as an extremely fresh experience. To be able to play in that kind of play style is very important to us.

Please look forward to the new Pokemon experience.

So Pokken will be a casual fighting game? Simple mechanics? I knew this may happen because Pokemon is a kid's game, but I seriously hope they don't sacrifice complexity for casuals. They're not even calling it fighting game. It's an "action game." Ugh. Injustice did a great job of being casual friendly. Why can't this be like that? Maybe it still is, but I don't like the sound of it.

YAY! Still fun. In normal fighting games, I never bother learning the combos but just rely on a few moves and mash buttons. .

Streefighter 4 was terrible , though. Dead Or Alive is my new fav of the genre.

Street Fighter 4 is amazing. And you can still mash buttons in a good fighting game with deep and complex mechanics.

Whelp, I take back what I said yesterday.

"We'll toss the dice however they fall,
And snuggle the girls be they short or tall,
Then follow young Mat whenever he calls,
To dance with Jak o' the Shadows."

Check out MyAnimeList and my Game Collection. Owner of the 5 millionth post.

Interesting but I do want to play it to see how it works.

I do that for every game in the genre anyway lol. Maybe it was just the 3DS port that made me think it is mdeicore...

Every character and stage was unlocked, and it's only so much you culd do in the laggy online. ( I have a great conncection.). I played it for about 12 hrs and then I was bored. So I sold it. I remember loving streetfighter in the arcade and (not sure if streetfighter still but ohwell) on my cousins ps2 when he let me try it.

Competitive action, competitive fighting, who cares. If it comes to Wii U expect an EVO tournament.

Is it that big of a difference though?

Playing any fighting game alone is boring. Doesn't mean it sucks. And and why would having less options make you "yay?" The way this sounds, more advance players lose the option for a viable competitive scene. How is that a good thing? Because you can win more matches online by just button mashing?

Ummm???? Want to wait friend? Even SSB wasnt a quote on quote "Competive Fighter" and being labelled as a "Party Brawler" yet its one of the most competitive games to exist. Its also top 2 most popular fighter in the competitive scene and #1 overall in popularity.

Shouldnt take this as anything yet, like LoZ U "open world" i think we should wait before giving judgement. Pokkem fighters can turn out to be one of the most competitive, we need to wait and see.
