Forums - Nintendo Discussion - Aonuma in EDGE: Zelda Wii U won't be open world the same way other games are.

Looks like someone needs to get beaten up with an LttP-shaped monster dildo.

Open world ain't SHIT.

And now my hopes for an actual open world goes up. Most companies don't know shit what an actual open world is and if they're making it different that means there is hope they'll do an actual open world :P

What do you mean by an actual open world?

One big connected world instead of big areas stitched together. Think Skyrim vs Xenoblade Chronicles. A lot of companies dare to say that the latter constitutes an open world. By my definition no Zelda game has been open world yet, with WW being kind of an exception.

No-one actually knows what that is. It's a pretty cool marketing buzzword though.

By my definition, WW and every top down Zelda is an open world. I think I get you, though. For me, the world has to be pretty seamless to be considered open.

seemless is one thing but it also shouldn't be artificially segmented. A lot of the areas in Zelda games have only a single entrance while the rest is being miraculously blocked off from all othe sides. ALTTP is a good example of this. It is a seemless world but there is not a lot exploring before you reach artificially fenced off areas. Open world also needs free movement. A character unable to overcome small obstacles by jumping or climbing also breaks the immersion of an actual open world.

Not sure I want that. I want ALttP in 3D, or whatever's closest. I like the structure it gives. I still feel like I'm exploring a large world. If that's what Aonuma means, I'm all for it, because I still consider it open world.

Seems like you just want no loading screens instead of the freedom of exploring an open world. Open world is all about freedom. That's why it's so closely associated with sandbox.

maybe it be like majoras mask, but instead of the moon crashing, something like a black hole will be tearing the world apart or something like the planet is being terra formed by some ancient race that makes it inhabitable so it will get smaller and smaller as time goes on.
