Forums - Microsoft Discussion - Illumi-room, What's up, can we get some love?

I want to know what they plan on doing with Illumi-room...  I understand it will be costly. However what about the people out here that can afford it. I say release it, allow us who can afford it to bring the price down and actually enjoy this great piece of hardware.

They could cheapen it up a little by making a version that slides together with people's existing Kinects.  So how about it, shouldn't they at least release it for people who can afford it? I think so.

For those who have not seen this hardware, I will post a video below. Come on MS, Let me buy this.....

Oh and I live in Illinois, if anyone knows anyone that is working on this tech. at University of Illinois at urbana Champaign. Actually I'm only about 45 minutes away. Go ahead and tell them I would love to test the product out. LOl

I think this is what MS needs, no matter the cost. This will blow people away.

it's not just about the cost to you.   there is the cost (and oportunity cost) to ms to develop this in a commercial way,.. not just r&d project.  there is the cost to developers to impliment it into games which may piss off developers that don't want to put any work into a feature very, very few will use.  there is the retailer shelf space cost,.. the xbox section won't likely expand so putting this on the shelf comes at the cost of space for other things like games.   and then there is the reputation cost that could be incurred if the product goes to market and fails.

all i'm saying is there is a lot that goes into a product launch and ms is, imo, being smart to not release this before it is ready.

I don't think a projector is gonna blow many people away.

We haven't heard much about it which is disappointing. Maybe they've cancelled plans for it.

I really liked Illumiroom, but from what I heard they cancelled research on it because they decided it would cost too much to produce for them to successfully market it.

With any luck some features of Illumiroom will get integrated into the supposed Fortaleza AR glasses they are now working on.

That's confirmed?

Seeing as Kinect got dropped from being a major component of the Xbox One, I really don't think we will see this anytime soon.

Yeah, pretty sure it was somebody on the Xbox team who said they either postponed it or cancelled it.

Aww, that sucks.

They probably couldn't figure out how to sell at profitably at low price.

There is a "Chicken and Egg" problem here...the cost of implementing Illumiroom would be such that there would be a VERY small number of users who would take advantage of it, and developers aren't going to want to put extra effort in supporting a product with a limited number of users. It was a VERY interesting demo...but it will never see the light of day as a retail product.
