Forums - Nintendo Discussion - Mario team dev size: 90 SM3DW, 60 SMG and 5 SMB

Nice chart. Would be even better if it took development time into account. I guess dev time for the 2D games is way shorter than for the 3D ones (like 1 year vs 3 years) which sheds some light on one of Nintendo's biggest problems: Resource allocations. They put lots of resources into games that sell less (3D Mario) and little resources into the games that sell more (2D Mario).

Is 2D really more popular than 3D, or is NSMBU "selling" more because it's a packin?

For me the preference for SM3DW over NSMBU is night and day.

That's a small list of people in the credits then.

Bet with Xander XT:

I can beat more games on his 3DS than he can on my PSVita in a month. Loser has to buy the winner a game on his/her handheld Guess who won? http://gamrconnect.vgchartz.com/thread.php?id=193531

I think both! After all, the 2D Mario games are much easier to pick up and play if you ask me!

That's why I added that little comment to the chart. The dev size is interesting, but you have to take into account the development times too. Maybe someone with that knowledge can whip up one!

New Super Mario Bros. Wii sold almost 30 million copies. 2D Mario has always been way more popular than 3D Mario, on DS, Wii, 3DS and right now on Wii U. I think there's enough Wii U bundles out there for people to actually decide if they want to play the game that comes bundled with the console. But hey, there's nothing wrong with your personal preference!

The 2D ones probably are selling more because they are bundled. But still, NSMBU is a better game than SM3DW.

I personally found 3DW more entertaining. Once I finished NSMBU, I haven't touched it again. 3DW is more replayable because is more enjoyable, challenging and more visually appealing. There's no way NSMBU is "better".

My bet with The_Liquid_Laser: I think the Switch won't surpass the PS2 as the best selling system of all time. If it does, I'll play a game of a list that The_Liquid_Laser will provide, I will have to play it for 50 hours or complete it, whatever comes first.

Accomplishing more with less. Shows that you don't have to throw the check book to make a good game.

Even for its time, what is there to make? Not that many different kinds of enemies or blocks, could probably count every single sprite if you put a bit of thought into it. Then music, programming, level design, and you're good to go. Hardest part in all likelihood was the physics at the time.

Monster Hunter: pissing me off since 2010.
