even the biggest corporations can get affected by muppets doing DDOS attacks.. even government systems. So not sure what that has to do with PS+ money being well spent.

Once they get a handle on where it's coming from etc, it will be fine.

Well they have been doing this all week. NCSoft (WildStar, Guild Wars) and CCP Games (Eve Online) got DDoS a few days back.
