Forums - Gaming Discussion - Did Sony lose Japan?

It's still far too early to call, in my view.

That said, home consoles are almost niche in Japan by this point. It's Portable Land.

Sony once ruled Japan with a iron fist.  Of course Nintendo always had the handheld market on lock, but the Playstation took the world by a storm selling 100,000,000 (estimate) consoles that the competition could only dream of selling.  With about 19,000,000 (estimate) consoles sold in Japan alone, PS couldn't be stopped and is one of the highest selling consoles of all time.

Sony's next console "Playstation 2" was a even greater success.  The PS2 sold more then the PS selling more then 150,000,000 (estimate) consoles.  Again, competition could only dream of selling that many consoles worldwide.  The PS2 sold 23,000,000 (estimate) in Japan, that's 5,000,000 more then the Playstation.  Sony ruled its home turf in the console market.

Fast forward to the Playstation 4.  The PS4 launched in Febuary in Japan. While the PS4 holds the lead and doing very well in the United States and Europe, it's falling short in Japan.  With the PS4 launch and seven months in, it currently sits at 600,000 (estimate) consoles sold.  What do you think, has Sony lost Japan to Nintendo?  I think they did.

PigPen...seriously you are always getting on Sony's case.

Anyway, I belive with more games the Sony base in Japan should rise with the PS4.

Of course it will sell more consoles. Will it sell a respectable number in the long run?  Will it win out Nintendo?  Again, I don't think so.

regardless at this point i believe Nintendo needs this more than Sony does...So, power to them.

Not at all.

It was the same with the ps3, horrible numbers until some japs games like Final fantasy and mgs4.

Ps4 will got a good boost (like the psvita) once she got jap games.

The PSVita may have got a good boost but is still considered a failure.  There is no doubt the PS4 will get a boost when certain franchises are released, but will it be successful?  Will it sale more (take down) the Wii U?

I think they just annoyed Japanese people by not launching the console in Japan first

old skool

Japan is a rapidly shrinking market

It's more the case of Japan losing interest in home consoles than anything else. This is also why we will never see a console reach the heights of PS2.

It has no good games. Once those come then PS4 will sell better there.

The only reason it's losing is no Japanese third party support. And they haven't the nerve to make freaking Knack the Pack-In?

Nobody has won anything yet, but PS4 will face much stiffer competition (Wii U) in the Japanese market, than they are in other markets.

Don't think Sony will have much of a problem winning Japan.

PS4 has been thrown into the cold water without any kind of decent support, but once the big guns come out (starting with MGS5) things will change quickly.
