PS4 exclusive ‘Tearaway Unfolded’ could be Sony’s next big system seller
‘Tearaway Unfolded’ is a little known title in development by Media Molecule that was revealed during the Sony Gamescom 2014 conference. Back in 2009 when the PS3 was struggling in terms of sales, Media Molecule came to rescue with its game ‘LittleBigPlanet’ and it turned out to be a system seller for Sony, with its cute and cuddly art design. Not only did LittleBigPlanet bring out the inner child in all of us, it was also a title that redefined its genre as a platformer.
If history were to repeat itself (which it usually does), we can expect Tearaway Unfolded to head in a similar direction to visual stardom. Tearaway Unfolded is a game set in a papery world of colorful art. It packs all the elements from LittleBigPlanet – its cutesy level design and a refreshing art style. But, it manages to take things a step further by enabling the user to interact with the DualShock 4 controller in a way that has never been implemented before. Players can use the light bar on the DualShock 4 to illuminate the game world or grow plants and reveal hidden secrets. On the other hand, the game also features flying mechanics where players can steer a paper airplane, or bounce on a trampoline using the controller’s touch pad.
Apart from the handheld version of Tearaway on the PS Vita, this is Media Molecule’s first big title for the PS4. LBP at its time went on to sell more than 5 million units and landed a whopping 95/100 score on Metacritic. If that is any indication, we can expect Tearaway Unfolded to achieve a similar level of success in terms of sales and numbers. For now, it will remain a sleeping giant as more information becomes available.
