First off...thanks for taking the time to try out this game and ignoring the game based on hype alone as many people do.

Secondly, you hit the nail on the head as far as "growing into the hero" is concerned. That is my favorite think about a "MetroidVania" and something that Super Metroid does better than most: it makes you feel, both through your own personal abilities and through the items you acquire, that you are becoming a god.

My favorite moment of this game...and probably any game, isthe reason for my screen name. When you attempt to go for an energy tank you fall through the floor and end up near a save station. Like many, I saved. I saved and then found myself at the bottom of a very large shaft with no way to get back up. And the whole time these little pesky creatures kept laughing at me, and jumping off the walls. Bastards.

Of course, those creatures were Etecoons and their only mission in the game is to teach you of your inherent ability to wall jump. That's right...you can wall jump without any items, once you master the mechanic. Games just don't do this anymore...they're so focused on creating am accessible avatar and gameplay system that they neglect to give advanced gamers new mechanics that they can use to sequence break. For this reason, and many others, Super Metroid IS the best game of all time.

Yeah, luckily I hadn´t saved because that bit drove me crazy! I have an idea on how to do it though, I will try it when I get home. Man, I am 36, and feel like a kid :P.

... and I love it!

I never was a fan of Nintendos own games back in the NES days. I didn´t like Zelda, Super Mario or Metroid but did go through them. I suppose a big part of my negative attitude came from me being a SEGA fan.

So, naturally I assumed I wouldn´t like their SNES counterparts. I have, however, now started playing through Super Metroid (just got the lava suit) and it is utterly amazing! The setting, music and graphics really pull you in. You also grow into this super hero gradually and just feel more and more superior.

It feels like a whole new world of gaming has opened up for me and I look forward to playing A Link to the Past, Castlevania and the likes soon enough.

I just wanted to share this great experience! Hope you too have found gems on consoles you previously didn´t like/play on! :)

What is you favorite Super Metroid memory?

The greatest Super Metroid moment (I don't know if you have reached it yet) is when you fall through a pit, and you learn how to get out by imitating the little animals.

I didn't even fall for that. They pulled the same trick in the original Metroid, so I knew what they were trying to do. I jumped in the pit afterwards though.

I am ashamed to say that I am playing it on an emulator with my 360 controller. I have started looking around for used SNES:es now though, I am looking for a Mega Drive aswell now since I have misplaced my old one.

I think breaking the glass and entering Maridia is what is clearest in my mind.

I had never played Metroid back when everyone was hyped about Prime, me included, so leading up to the release I decided to play Super Metroid, to see what it was all about.

Going from Super Metroid directly to Prime I had a great experience with both games.

@OP

Crazy.....not liking ANY of the Mario/Zelda/Metroid/Star Tropics/Kid Icarus/Kirby/Etc. games on NES? That's missing out on quite a lot.

But congrats on finally trying Super Metroid. It is, in fact, one of the best games ever made.

Which is why I wish they'd quit fucking around and make an actual sequel to it (sprite based, HD) on Wii U.......

I know, I get that alot :).

I just found SEGAs arcade approach more satifying, and I found alot of Nintendos offerings a bit... boring dare I say. But remember, I saw those games through the glasses of a fanboy, so I aim to revisit some of them :).

I actually found that part pretty annoying, since walljumping is pretty technical, and no guidance is given on what buttons or timing to use. Esoteric special moves were the only part of the game the drove me to read a FAQ.

Yeah, I remember that quite clearly too. It was the only part of the game in which I had to use a walkthrough (sigh)...

The way this game goes, it's quite an achievement to beat it without any sort of help, so for me that was a terrible moment.

I only needed help in Norfair after Crocomire, where you have to use super speed and then jump, but not the special jump. I didn't know you could that and thought I was supposed to leave. I don't even think it should have been possible, but I left, twice.
