Forums - Gaming Discussion - Final Fantasy XIII, it's not as bad as I thought

So recently I picked up FF13 from GameStop for $8. People hate this game so I thought this was probably a decent price for it, so I started playing it and... It actually isnt that bad...

I mean, the game doesnt feel like a masterpiece nor does it seem like an instant classic like other FF games in the past; but I really dont see what's wrong with it other than its really really obvious linerity... Which, doesnt bother me too much since I actually dont mind linerity in a game.

What is so wrong with it? It not my fave FF, but it doesnt sound like the dreaded series people in the FF community detests so much XD

I happen to love Final Fantasy XIII. c:

You'll find that a lot of people, a number of whom never played it, turn into rabid idiots when you bring up its merits, though.

People don't necessarily have to like it. It does some new things with combat, has a pretty complicated mythos (and sadly requires some reading to fully grasp, which I do think is a flaw), etc. There are subjective reasons why not everyone will like FFXIII, just like there are for any other game.

However, the way people react to the anti-FFXIII bandwagon in particular gets asinine very quickly. It's not like the logical criticism which occurs with many other games.

For one, I think some FF fans tend to have overly high expectations, to the point a game cannot possibly live up to them, which makes it appear like a subpar game.

Same thing happened with Super Mario Galaxy with my friend. I hyped it up to him so much, that when he finally played it, it just really didn't live up to his expectations at all.

Money can't buy happiness. Just video games, which make me happy.

I found it to be pretty good. The start is slow as hell but its still a pretty good time.

IMO the hate comes because it is called Final Fantasy and doesn't compare to previous ones, if it had any other name it would probably be thought of in a much more positive light.

I do wonder how different things would be if it was labeled as a FF spin-off

Mostly cause there hasn't been a great FF game for such a long ass time and what SE led us to believe with the XIII trailers was nothing like the final result and with every move that SE makes, it makes us Facepalm harder... just wait till u play FFXIII LR

And there are tons of other reasons like linearity,  stupid battle system, unlikable characters , some terrible story elements and plot holes, etc

Final Fantasy XIII is not just a bad FF game... It's a bad game PERIOD. That's just my opinion though!

I don't think it's bad, I just think it's really boring. Initially, I was enjoying it because it was a new Final Fantasy game. But the linearity just made the game really boring. I didn't really like the characters or story either. The gameplay and the soundtrack is pretty enjoyable though.

I wasnt a fan of the series yet when XIII was coming out, so I guess I didnt fall for any hype trailers that SE may have shown. Did people really think this was going to be the next "great" FF?

Of course, it was a new mainline Final Fantasy game that was gonna be on the new consoles at the time. I think the hype for the game was understandable considering some of the quality of other FFs.
