Forums - Sony Discussion - Sony should publish physical copies of their biggest indie games.

Should Sony help the biggest indie games get physical releases?

Fuck yeah. 58 74.36%

Nah. 20 25.64%

Total:78

I see some people complain about not having enough games on PS4. On the other hand, for some people if a game it's not on disk it doesn't count. I was checking the Rime trailer and many of the comments were asking for a physical release. I myself like physical copies better.

There are some indie games that are so big and ambitious that they have basically become what used to be mid-tier games. Games like:

Rime

WiLD

No Man's Sky

The Witness

Abe's Oddysee: New n' Tasty

I know that indie developers like digital distribution because it gives them the means to self-publish. Here's where Sony should come in and help them with a physical realease, so their games get more exposition and the console get more quality games on shelfs.

I mean, Sony is already publishing Infamous First Light on disk, so surely it wouldn't be a logistical or financial nightmare to publish these games. It's a win-win situation in my opinion.

What do you think?

Imagine these:

Couldn't find one for WiLD, so you'll have to imagine it with this:

Like they did with Journey?

Well yes, like they did with Journey.

But I think each game should get their own disk.

I agree, Oddworld, No Man's Sky and WiLD should definitely have a retail release.

Cant be done without a too big increase in price.. Lack of retailers cut and manufacturing is why the pricepoint can stay low. Not just the decreased budget. For a single 15 dollar psn title you would pay around 30 at a retailer if the profit margin is to be attained. There is a reason why sony and MS pushes digital distribution for full fledged titles as the retailer cut moves over to them. Even so the prices are the same for the consumer on that front because people expect 60 dollars. Now the best thing for digital purchases in terms of profit for platform holders is a 1rst party title. Take TLOU remastered for example. Not only do retailers loose their cut, but there is no 3rd party to give the money to and no disc manufacturing costs involved. This basically mean that in a completely special case they can instead of keeping 10-15 dollars in royalties for a 3rd party title sold at gamestop, they can keep the full 60 dollars for the same single amount of copy sold... Why would they take away digital sales when the profit ratio is so much higher than at retail.. I truly believe digital is the way to go to revitalize our industry. There simply isnt enough money to go around to keep gamestop and the rest in the loop.

They do

Not limited to indie games either

Well, retail space is expensive.

I do think those card with codes for a particular game instead of PSN credit can be fun to collect.

InFamous: First Light is getting a physical release for a little bit over the PSN price (£12 vs £15), so I don't think that's a valid reason.

I'd pay a little extra to have a disk, and that should be enough to cover the disk and delivery in most if not all cases, really. Nothing like $15 vs 30$ like you suggest.
