Forums - Politics Discussion - Student was suspended for saying " (Edit) Bless you", to someone who sneezed

Another story showing just how retarded the American education system is. Some schools dictate what kids can and cannot eat for lunch and will throw a kid's lunch away if the lunch is deemed too unhealthy. Some schools have banned outside food entirely.

teacher is just another left wing nutjob

So... from what I can gather this student spoke when she wasn't supposed to and then when she got in trouble for it she claimed it was an attack on her rights and her religion? Stay classy.

Bet with Adamblaziken:

I bet that on launch the Nintendo Switch will have no built in in-game voice chat. He bets that it will. The winner gets six months of avatar control over the other user.

ehh I've seen similar things Christian schools have done. The Right Wing is just as bad if not worst.

that is not it at all. one poster here posted that and its simply not true. This is an ongoing issue with the teacher. It has happened enough for these students to seek advice from their youth pastor, who educated them on their right to say bless you. It was not kids just acting out to disrupt class. If you read the article it states all of this. The teacher has decided to not respond to reporters (probably not allowed too)

"Those are the words Turner said are banned by her computer teacher at Dyer County High School.

She admits to saying "bless you" on Monday after the student next to her sneezed. She said she was just being polite.

"She told me that we're not going to have godly speaking in her class," Turner said. "I said, 'well my pastor told me it's my constitutional right.'"

In a letter shared with WBBJ 7 Eyewitness News by the Turners, allegedly from her teacher, she calls "bless you" and other expressions distract and interrupts smooth flow."

"Ridiculous," Pastor Becky Winegardner said. "It's just something I really don't think warrants in-school suspension."

Pastor Winegardner is the Turners pastor and a former high school principal. She said other students had come to her concerned about the teacher's rules. She said she told them to do the right thing.

"I am hoping to try and encourage my students to stand-up." Pastor Winegardner said. "To stand up for who they are. But I want to see it done in the proper place. During break time and free time in the classroom.""

That is very stupid. I am not even religious. I am an agnostic or sometimes want to lean atheist and I say bless you. Why do people need to take things so literally. I even say Merry Christmas. I say it as a tradition, not as something religious related. Saying Merry Christmas offends some people too which I find absurd. I hate people getting offended by stupid things.

tbh, there's a lot of hate on Both sides. One of them being Religion trying to get into schools. Creation Science teaches crap, Ken Hamm is clearly delusional yet many schools allow this kind of Teaching.

He could be annoyed at things like that and taking it out on Students. It wasn't right for him to do that, but personally Articles like these are just made to make people angry.

Turner, is a newly enrolled senior at Dyer County High School and admits to breaking a classroom rule by saying "bless you", but she said that rule, violated her First Amendment rights.

"Bless you, hang out, my bad, dumb, stupid, stuff, and things like that," Turner said.

Those are the words Turner said are banned by her computer teacher at Dyer County High School.

"She told me that we're not going to have godly speaking in her class," Turner said. "I said, 'well my pastor told me it's my constitutional right.'"

While the rule is stupid, how was her first amendment right violated?

Freedon of speech.

Freedom of speech protects you from Congress enacting laws that would get you arrested or penalized for expressing your opinion, as long as what you say doesn't violate other laws like libel, slander, copyright and others.

Freedom of speech is not a license to say anything anywhere.  An institution that you participate in can have rules on what is acceptable to say, for example a company usually has a code of conduct and breaking it can lead in getting fired or disciplinary actions.  Schools have rules, and a teacher can set classroom rules and use several disciplinary actions if they are not followed.

You are right on. However, prohibiting someone from saying "bless you" or "God bless you" while in class when someone sneezes is a rediculous rule and I would personally feel offended by it. If it was a blanket no talking time rule then that is how it should be treated. The school seems to think that it can prohibit any words it wants maybe they will prohibit "if", "and" or "but" next.

Ah but telling someone to do the "f" word is a form of oppression. Your trying to express anger at someone or make them feel horrible by saying that. Point out one person who means to do harm by saying "bless you." Even if you don't believe in God and Jesus Christ it's not like someone is insulting you by saying something kind to you. Then again, I am reminded time and time again of what the Bible says about the world and the way it will treat Christians:

I was mostly referring to curse words in general...otherwise, I was mostly discussing this in its legal context, not its religious context (of which there is basically nothing to talk about here...no one is being repressed)
