Forums - Politics Discussion - Student was suspended for saying " (Edit) Bless you", to someone who sneezed

Turner, is a newly enrolled senior at Dyer County High School and admits to breaking a classroom rule by saying "bless you", but she said that rule, violated her First Amendment rights.

"Bless you, hang out, my bad, dumb, stupid, stuff, and things like that," Turner said.

Those are the words Turner said are banned by her computer teacher at Dyer County High School.

"She told me that we're not going to have godly speaking in her class," Turner said. "I said, 'well my pastor told me it's my constitutional right.'"

While the rule is stupid, how was her first amendment right violated?

Not "God bless you", just "bless you".

The teacher sounds like a wacko.

A large number of people seem to think that the first amendment gives them the right to say whatever they want wherever they want, when it just prevents the government from making laws restricting freedom of speech (and a few other things). Establishments are still allowed to make their own rules, and I don't think anyone would object to schools suspending someone for saying "fuck you" and things like that using the first ammendment as a basis.

Its a stupid rule, but I really don't think it is violating any constitutional right, but I'm no expert in law ._.

In schools a students speech can be restricted on the basis of interfering with the pedagogical process. Simply put, if you say or act in a way that interferes with others ability to learn, you can be punished.

I looked into this case and right now this story portrays one side of it.

1. No recording or verifying of exactly what the exchange between teacher and student was has happened.
2. The student was not suspended or punished in any way
3. The content of the speech was NOT the issue, the class was simply told to be quiet and something was said
4. When told to be quiet the student protested and a disagreement occurred concluded with the student removing them self from the class.

We should always give both sides time to tell their story before rushing to judgment with pre-conceived notions of what happened.

i had a big rant ready to post and then i saw your post.   if your statements are true then the story sounds like the story was just written to rile people up to push that weird agenda people like my parents have of trying to protray a "war on religion" in america.

...but just in case:

as an atheist i've got to say,.. this is really stupid.

the point of the freedom of religion in the constitution is to protect the citizens of the united states from any religion receiving preferential or detrimental treatment.  the point is equality in law and to know you'll never be discriminated against by the law.

the point is not to try and pretend that religion doesn't exisit and is important to many of our citizens.  for fucks sake,.. if the US president can  say "god bless" during addresses to our citizens then this girl ought to be able to say it too.

Wow, what a dumb school and teacher.

Most American's only speak English I am told.

I was told that most Americans only speak Spanish, but that's another topic altogether.

Also, in the title you write she said "(edit) bless you", but you claim she only said "bless you". Thilus, firstly you lie in your title to attract attention, and secondly you purposely edit the word God like it is some forbidden word you are not allowed to use, just so you can atteactcattention to yourself and your article.

Which is a ridiculous article about a ridiculous situation in which the entire case is based on the disrespect student showed toward her teacher, and trying to make her some sort of a martyr instead of a regular, rebelious teenager.

And thus my first response, making fun of it all.
