Forums - Gaming Discussion - Yoshida claims Sony doesn't know why PS4 is selling so well.

"It's just beyond our imagination. We are so happy. But I for one am a bit nervous because we do not completely understand what's happening. You need to understand why your products are selling well so you can plan for the future, right? It defied the conventional thinking. Lots of people thought the dedicated game hardware might not be needed going forward, but still lots of people are very excited. When you see the new games coming out and being announced this E3 and Gamescom, I think there's a good enough reason for a gamer to believe this is something worth investing in.

I'm asking marketing people to tell us why. They've been to people who already purchased, and some of the early data was amazing in terms of the number of people who didn't used to own PS3 have already purchased PS4. So we are getting lots of new customers coming into PlayStation. And some people never purchased any last-gen hardware: PS3, or Xbox 360 or Nintendo Wii. So where did they come from?"

Why buy now then?

Shuhei Yoshida: Well, yeah. I don't know. As soon as we see a great sales number, our instinct tells us we should be concerned about future sales, right? Are we exhausting all the core gamers? If we sell this number of units, there are no more consumers we can sell to. That's a really terrifying prospect. So we want to understand who are these consumers who we do not necessarily consider core gamers, who are purchasing PS4 and why they are doing it and what they are doing with PS4, so we can create a bit more of a positive future, rather than saying, wow, we have sold to every single core gamer. So that's what we are doing.

If you demand respect or gratitude for your volunteer work, you're doing volunteering wrong.

I don't really understand it either. I think people were really ready for new hardware (longest console cycle I'm aware of) and the PS4 seemed like the best of the bunch. Strangely games are a minor factor in buying a PS4 at this stage as people are excited about the hardware.

That's how I see it anyway.

Really Yoshida? You don't think it's because of it being mainstream like the Wii was?

Bet with Xander XT:

I can beat more games on his 3DS than he can on my PSVita in a month. Loser has to buy the winner a game on his/her handheld Guess who won? http://gamrconnect.vgchartz.com/thread.php?id=193531

Lol they don't understand playstation home consoles usually sell great and have long legs.

I think his confusion comes off as sweet and humble.
He is trying to know more about his new customers so that is very good PR for Sony at least...

It's less about doing anything spectacular and more about just giving the audience a no-frills next-gen console at an affordable price.

Nintendo and MS both banked on controller gimmicks (Kinect and U tablet) that made their system expensive and under powered.

Sony is the only one for most PS3/360 owners that offered a big upgrade at a good price without throwing things in the box that they didn't want.

Think of it like tennis ... some times you win by outplaying your opponent. But sometimes you win by not having any unforced errors, whereas your opponent makes several of them.
