Forums - Gaming Discussion - Why do a timed exclusive for Tomb Raider

Final Fantasy was going to be exclusive to the PS3...not the PS4. Its obvious Microsoft was able to squeeze through the contract because the contract of exclusivity was for a specific platform. This leads me to believe one of two things.

1) Square could not complete the game in time for the PS3's gen thus voiding the FF Versus contract and thus voiding the contract.

2) Microsoft paid Square to drag out the duration of the contract until expiration while feeding them money, thus making the game the development drag out into next gen territory and no longer being apart of the Nova Cyrstallis Universe and officially becoming FFXV.

As for Sony not having the money to moneyhat, you're right.....Sony put their money where their mouth is...first party. MS should try it.

No, Final Fantasy XV was going to be PS4 only but Sony couldn't cough up the money to do so.

There was no "contract" and Microsoft isn't some evil being squeezing through anything. You act like Microsoft is some evil company out to ruin everyone's lives while Sony is the knight in shining armor, and this narrative is very popular on the internet.

MS is doing fine with first/second party games.

Omg, sick of this topic.......
Why make bayonetta 2 exclusive to wii u (which in my opinion will sell less than the two)
Because it makes the consoles library grow and potentially gain customers that want to play them ..that's why!

Thats the idea but it is no console seller. Mario will continue to be the seller, but it will be a slow burn for Nintendo from here on out.

Honestly if Sony had money-hatted say Destiny to be exclusive to the PS4 in 2014, we'd probably be having people falling over themselves telling us what a great move that was, how it was smart for Sony to get something to counter Halo, and how Sony are genius' for getting to it before MS did, etc. etc. etc.

I keep reading people putting comments like this and the reply I give is always the same. If Sony did this, it would also be seen as a dick move and people (mainly Xbox users) would certainly be complaining. It would not be a genius move and in 2014, the PR would be mostly negative.

Of course, the one difference is that this is an established franchise with a history of being on Playstation and PC. Destiny is a new IP and doesn't have quite the same historical significance. An equivalent would be if Sony suddenly made Mass Effect 4 an exclusive, but again, the PR would be mostly negative.

Because MS paid them a ton of money to make it a timed exclusive and its not like it wont come to the other consoles so it wont even be missing out on the extra sales from the PS4 and previous gen consoles.

This will probably be a bad deal for MS because I don't see Tomb Raider being that big of a franchise as of right now to make people buy a Xbox One just to get it a month or so earlier than on other systems. It really depends on how much MS paid for the exclusivity because I'm sure it will help boost One sales a bit but I'm not sure it will be worth the investment.

Every exclusivity deal has a contract between two companies. It needs to be legally binding.

I never said Sony is a knight in shining armor but MS makes them seem that way. Thats how bad MS is. You must've missed the start of the generation. Them not stooping to Microsofts level with DRM and caused a lot of Xbox gamers who were going to shun their Xbox Ones to stay loyal to MS so in the end they should thank them for Sony giving them the blue print on how to save face when you show people you true colors.

Also, what first party games is MS making that are so "fine"? Most of their best franchises were purchased and not made. When Phil Spencer was talking about moneyhatting Uncharted they admitted they tried to make one but failed to and they wish they had an uncharted. MS admitting that they cannot create a game of Uncharteds stature internally at the time being.

Final Fantasy XV never was exclusive to PS4 though, although Square probably went to Sony. Sony just didn't want to pay them for it.

I think it would have been great if Sony did pay for exclusitivity - gives them a competitive advantage. However if Sony was going to buy an exclusive game it would probably be better to get something like Destiny, Grand Theft Auto, or Watch Dogs or something to appeal more to westerners.Microsoft clearly bought Rise of the Tomb Raider to compete with Uncharted.

Sony was going to stoop to MS' DRM but saw the reaction to it. MS wanted DRM because of their digital distribution features, not because they were some evil company that hates you. But you forget one thing: Microsoft got rid of their stupid DRM features a WEEK after that disastrous E3. On the other hand, it took three YEARS for Sony to turn the PS3 around. You must've forgotten the PS3 debacle, which Sony did not rectify til a rebranding in 2009. As bad as Microsoft's 2013 E3 was, nothing will ever match Sony's E3 2006.

And then of course you have the PSN outage in 2011, which Sony wouldn't admit to til 2 weeks after it happened.

If you think Sony is some friend that has your back you're wrong. Both Microsoft and Sony are corporations who will do what they can do to get an advantage. That's why this "Sony is the nicest company ever!" narrative is getting annoying. For example, while Microsoft's DRM was bad, what you forgot to mention was that during that same week Sony was going to start making you pay for online. Yet no one bashed Sony for it. For years all we heard was how Microsoft should make Live Gold free and now that Sony is charging for online no one cares. This is what I mean by the narrative that Sony can do no wrong while Microsoft eats little kids.

And Microsoft has Halo and Gears of War. As good as Uncharted is, it doesn't have near the impact Halo has. Companies do this stuff all the time. Resistance and Killzone were Sony's attempts at getting their own Halo. Crash Bandicoot was Sony's answer to Mario and Sonic. Rise of the Tomb Raider is Microsoft's attempt at getting an Uncharted. Forza was Microsoft trying to get their own Gran Turismo.

I am not a fanboy - the PS2 is my second favorite console of all time and I preferred the PS3 over the Xbox 360, but dang people need to calm down about Sony already!

Because Square Enix.

No really, they've been making questionable moves left and right. I really don't know what is up with that company these days.
