Forums - PC Discussion - 92% of all game sales on PC are digital

Not surprising at all, but seeing as (even in this site) people often like to bring up how PC versions don't sell or pc gamers don't buy games etc.. and use vgc retail numbers..

http://www.vg247.com/2014/08/18/pc-game-sales-are-92-digital/

92% of all game sales on PC are through digital distribution, with retail amounting to less than 10%, according to one analyst firm.

According to a statement by analyst firm DFC Intelligence made to PCR Online, digital game sales on PC amounted to 92% of the total sales in 2013. The firm expects the number to grow even further in the coming years.

It’s no wonder we hardly see any of the heavy hitters’ PC SKUs appear on the weekly charts, and it will remain that way until the industry finds a way to track digital sales through Steam, or through the multitude of website that sell PC game keys.

Larger firms like NPD have only recently started tracking digital sales, and even then, only a few publishers are cooperating.

It will be interesting to see if this will change over the next few years, given that Microsoft and Sony are trying their best to cut retail out of the equation by pushing digital sales through their online stores. One would assume that should sale numbers from digital store fronts on PS4 or Xbox One reach similar numbers to those of retail, publishers will be disclosing them more regularly.

Yup. Cheaper and much more convenient.

Xbox One - PS4 - Wii U - PC

If only steam released their sales numbers, we would truely understand how big of a market PC gaming really is

I never buy console games digitally, unless i don't have the option and yet i buy every PC game digitally, thanks to Steam.

Why? Because you can't trade/resell PC games. Console games are tradebale though and you have less room on a console compared to a PC.

Not surprised! The last PC game i bought at retail was Rayman Origins in 2012 if I'm not mistaken!

I know. But i meant the physical games on PC which you can do little with and Steam is so much cheaper.

I'd like to go all digital with my Wii U and PC. I hate discs now. If only Nintendo would go with the account based system everyone wants them to.

PC gamers dont have much of an option, there is a reason I dont pay more than $10 for any games on PC. This number probably includes mobile sales cause those are PCs as well.

Getting an XBOX One for me is like being in a bad relationship but staying together because we have kids. XBone we have 20000+ achievement points, 2+ years of XBL Gold and 20000+ MS points. I think its best we stay together if only for the MS points.

Nintendo Treehouse is what happens when a publisher is confident and proud of its games and doesn't need to show CGI lies for five minutes.

they had the same option but made a sort of collective choice - simply because it's better

i really wonder how long games will remain available to re-install on steam...
