Forums - PC Discussion - Star Citizen doesn't look that great in my opinion, but It looks ambitious

To tell ya the truth, I'm liking Elite : Dangerous, a lot more than Star Citizen.

They did, read it on gaf, tbh I dont think it'll be even ready by 2018. The game has 3 large components, its lik 3 games in 1 and they're not even halfway done with the 1st.

The game might not be fully finished by 2016, because it never will, they'll keep adding things until they run out of money

But you understand they have 3 studios + outsourcing. The DFM's most important goal was to get the netcode sorted and that will carry over to everything. They're not just working on the space fighting, then working on planetside and then working on FPS. Work is already well underway on the other modules

There should be some FPS and multi-crew ship action later this year, or earlier next year. They are making good progress and now they've got the netcode in place AND a system to damage ships, they are going to be going a lot quicker

Being early in development is not that great an excuse for not having a visual and technical focus. Those things don't come out of the blue by themselves later on. But I am of course hoping that you're right, and that a larger pattern will emerge.

When you're early in development and the single most important thing to get right is the netcode, then it's only sensible to put high end graphics in. It's the best way to test it!

You also have to remember that this stuff shouldn't really be playable, certainly if it had been publisher funded

What I am talking about is not high-end graphics. I am talking about visual direction. I've seen no sketches, concept paintings, preliminary level geometry, or character models leading me to believe that this will go anywhere particularly interesting.

On the technical side, I am also not sold on why this will be fun to play. They have a wealth of features planned, but how they come together to form anything fresh or different is unclear. To me at least. And it shouldn't be, as I see it.

Maybe they have a vault full of stuff that we haven't seen, that they're working towards, maybe that vault is the director's head, and people around him are trying to extract as much as possible before it's too late, or maybe they will all keep doing what they do best the result will be more than the sum of their individual efforts by chance.

I hope one of them happen.

Well then you just don't like the graphics style? Well I guess the game isn't for you then

It will fun to play because they're receiving tons of feedback to tune it and make it fun to play. What's really going to make the game stand out is the immersive nature and how you can seamlessly go from walking around Earth, go get in your ship, fly to a distant planet and start driving around your rover. There's no other game like that

By the the time Star Citizen is ready to launch, PS Penta might just be right around the corner.

There's No Man's Sky, which is somewhat like that, and will be out long before this. Besides, that game description is exactly what I'm talking about. It's entirely conceptual and not at all focused on how the game is fun to play. Doing those things could be boring as all get out, depending on the execution. Many people on the team are veterans though, so I'm sure they have an idea of what they are doing.

Concerning the visuals, it's not that I don't like the style, as much as it is there not being much of a style at all. At least its not very expressive or coherent. It might come around, but as it stands it doesn't seem very inspired to me.

Right, but No Man's Sky is entirely procedurally generated. If you ask me, that doesn't lead to as good a result. Well when your game is more than a year away, it might not be fun, but if you've got the right direction and the right leaders, then it should all come together

But the only bit I've played has been fun, so that's all I can really judge it on

You can't say there is no style at all, of course there's a style, it's just a massively variable style depending on the in game manufacturer of the ship.

This is probably the most out there kind of ship http://starcitizen.wikia.com/wiki/Khartu

But I honestly can't understand how you think there's no art style

I'm not talking about ship design as an isolated thing, but general impact of what's on screen. Shapes, colors, texture detail levels, effects, interface. Some of the ships have some impressive futuristic industrial design going on, but that's a minor element of the whole game's visual expression. I can't seem to spot any coherent choice in the stylization of things. What's left out and what isn't seems a little arbitrary to me.

It's not really, noticible.

I guess I'm just nitpicky.

It's not there. Not in the gifs. It's your computer causing the video to tear or your browser. When I use firefox my screen tears in videos that wouldn't normally tear in chrome on youtube. So yeah.
