Forums - Sony Discussion - Theory: The reason why Sony focuses on indies so much.

I mean am I the only one to notice? They help all these little indie studios because sooner or later they will be big AAA studios and will always remember that Sony gave them their first big break into the industry which means more exclusives for Sony. And if the talent is too good to pass up they can just buy them for cheap before they get too big and expensive. I even heard Sony acquired ND when it was still indie and now they make some of the best games in gaming.

Seems to me more like a stopgap attempt to counter the lack of big games now that just about everything's been pushed back to 2015.

Funny you talk about this. I was thinking that just yesterday.

I think it's only a matter of time before some of them become bigger studios, with bigger budgets, etc.

And when they become bigger, Sony will reap the benefits. Something we've seen happen with Quantic Dream already. Because of the confidence that Sony shows them and the quality of their relationship, they're staying exclusive to Sony consoles. Add other studios like that, and it gives their platforms a definite something that differenciates them from the competition. That's always a plus.

Many of those studios will never pan out. Maybe a couple studios with big hits, but not all of them.

And it's not like Sony is giving financial support to all the indie devs. They cherry-pick a few promising ones and go from there. Sony's sponsorship of indies is pretty overblown.

Xbox One - PS4 - Wii U - PC

The best indies can do is release on as many platforms as possible.

A stopgap attempt that began a few years ago when they started working with studios like thatgamecompany, PixelJunk, and Giant Sparrow?  That doesn't make a lot of sense.  Even most of the PS4 titles had to have been in the pipeline for a year or so before launch.  They've even taken the strategy to Japan with Playstation CAMP.

No, it's clear they came up with this plan quite awhile ago.

Of course they cherry pick. It's not like they'll finance the entire indie industry. -__-

Give credit where credit is due... Can you do that?

It's certainly has the potential to be good PR.

Interesting theory and whether or not its true, Sony has done a great job with indie developers for the past few years so I do commend them for it and I hope they continue to do so

No no no. The support they give to indie studios is overblown.
