Yes, but the real question is: is water actually wet?

Even though the entire Polygon article is based on bad math, poor logic and a truckload of assumptions, I do actually think Square Enix will come out of the deal ahead.
They will still sell what they were going to sell on XBox, but will avoid direct confrontation with Uncharted. By postponing the release, they will still sell a decent amount on PS, and will receive additional cash (upfront).
It's only confusing why MS would do this. They have very little to gain with this timed exclusivity, they will definitely lose money. And have indirectly increased sales of Uncharted by removing its competition from the equation.

Of course it will net more sales. ..

On xbox

Don't you mean globally on Xbox in the US?

The equivalent should be "More sales across every console on Xbox globally in the US".

They were always going to get Rise of the Tomb Raider, and it's the only title they have that goes for that audience. Instead of Uncharted, RotTR PS4 and RotTR XB1 all competing for the same audience, now it's Uncharted vs RotTR XB1.

You're also forgetting that the hype of the game may die down significantly during its exclusivity period, only hurting SE and Sony's sales.

Finally, it's currently the only shot XB1 has at competing with PS4 on a multiplat title. You can bet that the fact the XB1 has sold more than PS4 on exactly 0 multiplats is a monkey they want off their back so they can try and convince third parties it's worth their time sales wise to focus on the XB1 version over PS4.

Of course Rise of the Tomb Raider will end up selling more than Tomb Raider, just like Mario Kart 8 won't reach 2 million sold until March of 2015

That Polygon article is hot garbage, refutable by anyone that can do fifth grade math. I know I'm currently just a scrub reading forums and blogging on the internet, but at least I don't post utter garbage like that.

We all know games see their best sales within the first few days or the first week, and AAA titles sell more on hype than any other factor. Staggering the releases only means that the hype has a chance to die before it releases to the widest audience.

SE may come out ahead on this deal, but that would only be if Microsoft throws enough cash at them, because it sure as hell won't be from increased sales.

I would ever go further and say Polygon is a hot garbage website in its entirty. Do you remember what they said about the Mario Kart 8 sales and how faceplamlying wrong they were about that.

Lmao I see what you did there. Nice one :).

The math part of the article was wrong but everything else mentioned in it was right and made sense.
