Tomb Raider won't die like that. Final Fantasy didn't die when SE switched from Nintendo to Sony, TR won't die here.

Fans will bitch and moan for a few months, and then the game will come out and people who like the franchise will purchase a One to play it. It may end up doing great.

Do you really think people will buy the Xbox One only to play Rise of the Tomb Raider?

Fans of the franchise certainly will. It's not going to have the selling impact of a game like Uncharted 4, but it'll be a nice exclusive that will probably encourage TR fans to buy the console.

I agree that this one seems like a weird decision on both companies parts... SE after complaining that the reboot under-performed and then making the direct sequel exclusive to one platform (this will obviously reduce sales further) and also MS for not going after a more high profile game...

Weird decision indeed...

Some people will do, because of just how popular Tomb Raider 2013 is with people.

What Microsoft need to do is really get behind the marketing for the title and hope to God that it will at least distract the mass market from the inevitable Uncharted 4 advertisement juggernaut that Sony will have planned.

I gotta be honest, it didn't do so well on the current gen consoles, especially on the Xbox One. Seeing how many people got angry at Microsoft today, I doubt this game will be a system seller. I admit they did a good job with the Fall 2015 release date, since there will be more consoles sold by then, thus giving a better chance for the game to have decent sales.

People seem to think that it is just free for a game to release on additional consoles. It is far from it, with additional programming costs, server costs, advertising costs. Additionally, people would be astonished what Microsoft and Sony are willing to pay for exclusive rights to a game. For example, Microsoft paid $75 million just to get GTA IV onto their console. A game that still only has 11 million lifetime sales (on Xbox). That is almost $7 for every single copy sold. I realize that GTA is a higher profile game, but it goes to show that sometimes the amount paid for deals like this can actually be a pretty good chunk of money when you look at it as a dollar amount per game sold.

This is true, but if the production values are worth having, the cost of porting will not porportionately be that expensive. This is why exclusives are becoming rarer and rarer.

Considering S-E's own investor documentation says Crystal Dynamics only has about $40 million of common stock, if Microsoft were really throwing that kind of money around it would make more sense for them just to buy the studio. You're talking a substantial amount of what the studio is worth to buy an exclusive.

Compare to Rockstar, which has more than three times as many employees and is clearly worth a lot more.

Either it's timed or that decision was made early on...because I can't believe they would want it to be exclusive to the Xbox One now that we know the PS4 has already reached 10 million sold.

Bet with Adamblaziken:

I bet that on launch the Nintendo Switch will have no built in in-game voice chat. He bets that it will. The winner gets six months of avatar control over the other user.

You mean like Bayonetta 2 for wii u?

Yeah I really wonder if SE saw it like this:

Uncharted will crush TR, so how about we let MS pay us to release it on PS4 when there is less competition (Later).

I wonder how this thread looked like if Sony secured that deal...

Well it would look different because PS4 is the best selling console of all time with an install base of 10 million already so doubts about the franchise being killed would be fairly low.

So, why Halo francise is not dead?

Because the Xbox had a install base of less than 1/4 of PS2.

Or may be every franchise that is not in the iOS is dead, cuz iPad + iPhone is about 10x bigger than the current gen (each new model!!)?

Or may be every franchise that is not on PC with 3Bi install base.

Sure. Big fans will buy the game and console, non-fans won't care. A lot of the people complaining right now were probably not going to buy the game anyway.

I bet MS agreed to pay all the development costs.
