Let's separate being independent (no publisher backup) from being indie (small team and small profit) please.

duduspace11 "Well, since we are estimating costs, Pokemon Red/Blue did cost Nintendo about $50m to make back in 1996"

Mr Puggsly: "Hehe, I said good profit. You said big profit. Frankly, not losing money is what I meant by good. Don't get hung up on semantics"

Azzanation: "PS5 wouldn't sold out at launch without scalpers."

Lol. Why does it even matter if games are made independently or not. Quinton has no point

It doesn't matter. I'm all for indies. However, there's a few other people who do not believe that indies aren't Sony's main focus - despite the evidence. This whole argument basically started with people refusing to acknowledge that there are some Sony fans that are a bit upset with Sony's new direction with both the PS4 and the Vita in regards to indies.

Except this is not a "new direction". They're still making AAAs and still getting the same 3rd parties. The only difference is that now there are more indies, which do not replace AAAs...

Nobody said they were replacing AAAs. You guys are. I dunno why it's so difficult for you guys to comprehend this, but here we are. Whether you guys acknowledge this as a new direction or not simply does not negate the fact that Sony is now focusing more on indies - so much so, that it is their main focus. Same with Nintendo. Nintendo is focusing on the indie market over the AAA market. Once again, the reason why is because AAA developers are dying and the market is changing. This isn't a bad thing by any stretch of the imagination.

Honestly, I think you guys are arguing for the sake of arguing.

I know that someone in this thread is doing this, but it's not us.

But hey I guess your whole indie point is true, if you actually consider things like this

indie....

Independent /= Indie.

The rEVOLution is not being televised

Who gives a damn who makes the game? If it's great, it's great. Stop trying to use the term 'Indie' as some automatic measure of insignificance. It's getting extremely boring. Just to clarify: Indie doesn't mean 8-bit.

You seem a bit confused as to what an indie title is...

Precisely! I'm trying to figure out why people are getting all defensive because Sony is focusing on high quality indie titles. These titles are good!

The person confused is you, the generally agreed upon view of what an indie games is, is not "game made by an independent studio"

This is the definition that Wikipedia uses for example:

"Independent video games (commonly referred to as indie games) are video games created by individuals or small teams generally without video game publisher financial support. Indie games often focus on innovation and rely on digital distribution. Indie gaming has seen a rise in the latter half of the 2000s decade, primarily due to new online distribution methods and development tools."

So no, a $60 retail game created by an independent studio backed by a huge publisher is not an indie game.
