But PSP was successful. Sony just somehow completely screwed the Vita.

Yeah PSP did brilliantly. But for the wrong reasons, alot of it's sales were due to how easily hackable/pirateable it was

I think it has more to do with the fact that it could do things that mobile phones couldn't. LIke watching movies on a decent screen (we do that on our phones and tablets now), Skype, etc. I remember always marathoning series on it whenever I would travel long hours.

I don't think Sony made any significant mistakes with the Vita. The market changed, even PSP saw a massive decline well before Vita hit the market.
