Best joke I've read in a long while. SPIEGEL was once germany's most important and serious new magazine. But that was decades ago, it has become such an uncritical yellow press magazine nowadays that there's the saying that SPIEGEL has become "BILD für Abiturienten"("BILD for high-schoolers"). (BILD is germany's most despised yellow press newspaper).

And that saying already existed before the editor-in-chief of BILD actually really became editor-in-chief of SPIEGEL...

Apart from a few articles now and then from Jakob Augstein, a member of the Augstein family who once founded SPIEGEL, SPIEGEL has become complete rubbish. He openly criticizes the way the magazine has become something like the front line of national anti-russia propaganda.

But seriously: being the "german reference" (I assume that's what called "Leitmedium" in german) might actually still be correct - but that just demonstrates just how irrelevant and bad german journalism has become nowadays.

There's no longer even a single relevant news medium in germany that stands out in any way - Der SPIEGEL definitely once was such a medium for decades, but ever since the Augstein family who founded SPIEGEL got pretty much kicked out and the high profile positions were being assigned to the usual "transatlantics" with strong US/NATO-ties, the magazine has become hardly more than a copy of the other big names in german news media, like ZEIT, FAZ, Süddeutsche and BILD. As I've already pointed out, there's an interesting development in germany during the last months that surprisingly many people have started openly uttering discomfort with or criticizing the press, and one of the most-heard criticisms is that the german press has become extremely "synchronized", one-sided and propaganda-filled. The word "Systemmedien" ("system media") is often used in this context, and Der SPIEGEL might be the most-criticized medium in this development.

But anyway, what exactly are you even trying to suggest by claiming that SPIEGEL is "still the german reference"? I find that argument as meaningless as the WW2 death numbers you posted. Just because an article was published under the label of a once well-respected news medium does not prove it's trustworthy.

being a reference in journalism means that you actually investigate, it's all the difference between "journalists" that relay information by copy/pasting and journalists that verify their sources

in this case it means that Der Spiegel considered the book, read it, analyzed the methodology and flaws, and didn't dismiss its core thesis

i prefer not to enter the rest of your argument until you elaborate it some more, i find quite sad when people say "that is not true, the source is crap, the point is moot" and yet fail to provide anything else than superficial opinions
