The decline was obvious even last generation. The DS was really the only thing that actually did very well, everything else just fell to the wayside. (Although the Wii's 15 million number isn't necessarily bad.)

I don't think we'll see anything like the DS in Japan again. Actually, scratch that; anywhere.

Console devs stopped focusing on Japan last gen, and it's coming back to bite them. Now no one is going to pay for a console that puts foreign countries first and Japan last in priority.

Yeah, it is probably right that we should look at these sales as the new baseline. It is sad that home consoles are a dying breed over there and we will probably see a similar trend in EU and US but a few years down the line,

BUT! This only means that the medium to play games will change and I like change so... :)

PS2 sold in Japan after two days 980K in Japan

The PS3 was officially a sales failure that even lead to a book 'why the Ps3 is a failure' in japan'.
Overpriced no games for it and still it managed to sell in 23 weeks 860K...

The PS4 is cheaper, almost no competition and was delayed so should also have a easy time to do better than PS3...But after 23 weeks only did around 650K...

Sales are horrible...
