Forums - Movies & TV - Looks like Guardians of the Galaxy could have the biggest opening of the year!

With a $125 million dollar budget I wouldn't say that Ninja Turtles has overperformed.  And I was right about what I said earlier Guardians is now trending ahead of Tranformers 4 not by much but the daily lead will increase soon enough since it will have better legs.

Saw GotG, amazing movie, other than the cringingly bad way the romance was executed.

There was barely any romance anyway.

Still, I don't think it was poorly executed.

Guy meets girl, who hates his guts and wants to kill him. They form a very shaky alliance. Girl falls in love with him as he makes her listen to some cheesy songs. They almost kiss, even though they have known each other for a couple of days, max, most of those spent hating each others' guts.

Yeah, I had to shut my eyes each time a romance scene came on.

Other than that though, the rest was great!

I liked the movie, but it was only average. Winter Soldier is the best comic based action movie to date.Yes better than TDK and the Avengers.

"Each time"? There was only ever one romance scene.

And about them going from hating each other to having a romance scene in a couple of days, well, you can say that about just anything in this movie. Everyone hates each other in the beginning, and that's one of my favorite things about it, actually.

There were at least two or three.

When they listened to music, when he jumped out of his ship to save her and held her in a sensual way were at least two, not to mention the end. I appreciated that everyone became comrades in the end, but mortal enemies -> lovers in a couple of days feels cheap in any movie.

Like I said though, everything else was done very well. I liked every single other relationship in the movie.

I actually thought the romance was hilarious; one scene in particular.

It didn't feel cheap to me, but I get where you're coming from - that relationship definitely wasn't my favorite part of the movie either.

However, having watched the movie 3 times already, I think it's worth noting that Gamora and Quill never quite think the same of each other. It's clear at the beginning that she doesn't have too much respect for him (nowhere near "mortal enemies" from what I've noticed) but he doesn't think the same way about her. Their relationship gets better as the movie progresses, but to me it feels that while Star Lord falls in love with her, she still feels unsure about it - everything felt perfectly natural to me just like the friendship relations around the entire group.

I think it all comes down to the fact that Gamora is a somewhat uninteresting character when compared to the 4 other guardians. Their relationship certainly wasn't the movie's strength, but it didn't feel cheap or off to me, and it never took central attention or anywhere near that.

That might be it. The other characters were certainly more interesting.

Saw it this weekend. Great movie but I thought the team was put together a little to easily and quickly like others said the relationships seems to build to quickly.

Saw lots of people saying this was better than the avengers in some other forums I visit. Wasn't even close to me but this movie surpassed any marvel movie in terms of comedy and that was great I really enjoyed it a lot. I actually wish I would have waited to see this with my daughter she would have liked it. I think at this point its obvious will see more and I can't wait.

C'mon this is one realistic scenario of overperforming by a movie with that much budget and most critics not being friendly. 65 mn first weekend is pretty good. The third weekend should kinda seal the fate for GOTG, but I still don't think the movie was as enticing as Cap 2's "Hail Hydra" effect . So smaller legs and will surely finish behind Cap 2.

What's fun about this, is that for me the main reason why I liked this movie WAY more than Avengers was how amazing and real the relationships within the group felt. Whereas for me the development of the group in Avengers always felt extremely cosmetic, in Guardians of the Galaxy I thought this was incredibly natural and believable.

Just different points of view, I guess.

That's funny I didn't feel the realtionships were that real at all. The whole gang trusted each other much to easily for people that have made a life out of trusting no one and betraying everyone. It all just felt very rushed and fast.

In the avengers I thought the relationships were better. They were all so used to doing it a lone and it wasn't until the final battle they finally came together and fought togther. Like you said though just different POV. Either way as a kid who grew up wathching super hero cartoons this is one of the greatest times in my life when it comes to movies. Not only do I get to see real life ptrayls of my favorite super heros but they effects have been amazing on top of that.

I still remember the opening from X2 one of the greatest movie openings in history. I have a hard time thinking of any movie that has a better opener than that one. Watching Nightcrawler in all his glory and growing up as a kid loving that character it was just amazing to see.
