Last year proved a cruel Summer for Nintendo, with a total sales figure of 80,000 GameCubes sold worldwide in the April-June quarter - a figure so low, incidentally, that some claimed the reports had to be a mistake. A significant price cut and a fair amount of chutzpah later, however, and Nintendo has managed to salvage the last few months of the year with the claim that in the US, the 'Cube has improved its standing dramatically.
Nintendo of America's Perrin Kaplin, in an interview with the US press, claimed that the 'Cube was the only console of 2003 to experience positive growth, and perhaps more importantly that the 'Cube is second to the PlayStation 2, leaving the Xbox in third position - a claim that will doubtless have Microsoft reaching for its calculator.
Nintendo estimated that in December, GameCube sales had reached 1.1 million units, with the Xbox managing 991,000 units and PS2 sales standing at 1.8 million; those figures are expected to be confirmed next week.
Additionally, Nintendo said that the GameCube has experienced a 70 percent year-on-year increase in worldwide 'Cube sales during the month, categorically stating that in the US, Nintendo was number two with GameCube, though Kaplin conceded that the global picture was harder to read.source:http://www.howardforums.com/printthread.php?t=284982
