Depends on the measure you're using.
I expect Smash to sell more copies than MK8 by either the end of 2014 or the end of the financial year (end of March 2015). I expect Mario Kart 8 to sell more in the long run, though. I'd expect Mario Kart to have longer legs than Smash.
It will be hard to improve on MK8 s attach Rate IMO

Well.. people think this because it makes sense when you think about it. Melee was THE REASON to own a GameCube. It launched 2 years before Double Dash. A lot of people didn't like Double Dash but Mario Kart 8 is a different story. and its not impossible its just not as likely.

Of course. MK8 will be smashed to pieces 
But seriously, MK8 hasn't received half the hype smash got.
Both will be 5 million+ sellers but I think Mario Kart will edge it out.
