On international flights, they treat game consoles like laptops. So if you're not checking them in, then you will have to take out the console and get it scanned just like a laptop. I've traveled multiple times with my consoles at many airports in North America and Europe in the past year, and every time I've had to take it out. Even my brand new Wii U had to be taken out from the box to be scanned. Its annoying but I'd rather not check in such fragile stuff cause baggage handlers are very rough. Once I forgot to take it out from my hand baggage, and I they had to open and nspect my hand baggage and re scan the whole thing and console seperately. It wasted 15 min and I had to go back to the end of the line :/ .
I don't know the rules in Europe, but even on domestic flights in Canada, I've had the same security screening procedures. In Europe I've passed through Heathrow, Frankfurt, Amsterdam and Manchester this year and all required me to take out my game console.
