Forums - Gaming Discussion - History repeating: Xbox One is following PS3′s rocky first year

The Xbox One doesn't have the advantages that the PS3 needed to come back. PS3 had bluray, WiFi from day one, free online, was known for being more powerful, and had a stronger first party. The Xbox One and PS4 are way more similar. They both cost the same, imo ps4 still has a stronger and more varied first party, they both have subscription costs, PS4 substantially more powerful. Every advantage the PS3 had and needed to come back the Xbox One doesn't have. It'll be very interesting to see how it turns out but I'm not sure rehashing the whole Halo and Gears formula will work this gen. Microsoft need to make games instead of getting third parties to do so because eventually these "exclusives" will end up on PlayStation platforms, Titanfall is already going to fall victim to this, dead rising 4 may do, heck even sunset overdrive 2 may come to PS4. Microsoft need to dramatically change.

A major difference is X1 has absolutely no chance of catching up and/or surpassing PS4, nor do they deserve to

Hmm.........I don't think X1 will even be 10M behind PS4......more like 20-30M behind!

The thing that sets it apart is their horrible things they did at the start with the DMR ect, and now that most 3rd parties prefer the PS4 and also how the PS brand is simply, strongest.

With the 360/PS3, the question was always what does sony has to do right to catch up? Drop price, more games, make console smaller, improve their network...etc. Funny thing is that MS could take that very same approach and it wouldn't have as much of an impact as it did when sony did them.

With the PS4/XB1, the real question is what does sony have to suddenly do wrong that will give MS the advantage. Cause even with all the efforts MS are making, they are still being outsold. And this is at the point in the gen when they are basically on par with eachother.

Xbox One may not catch PS4 in sales but when I hear people talk about how the system is bad and not worth owning I just shake my head every time. I own both PS4 and Xbox One and I would not trade mine in for anything. Its a great system that gets better each month with real meaningful updates. Cant wait to see whats next!

Why not? If the PS3 could do it, why is it outside the realm of possibility for the X1 to do it?

If MS focuses on providing quality first-party titles, I don't see why the console won't be looked back on as a success, similar to how people now view the PS3. Some of these responses are ridiculous, it hasn't even been a year yet.

lots of mindless bias already.

i dont think it will catch up with the ps4, as long as it is selling better than x360 which wasnt a bad selling console i think its doing very well.

The haters must be bored with wiiu hating today.

Because Xbox doesnt have nearly as many territories where it has a history of success like Playstation does.

Europe is and always has been Sonyland, PS1 was the first hugely successful console in Europe and they have been the preferred choice ever since. Xbox has little no chance being successful in Japan with the first 2 consoles averaging about one million each while Playstation has always sold 10m+ in Japan. Also in developing countries Playstation has always been the brand of choice.

Basically Xbox only has America where it can possibly stage a comeback against PS4 but even if it does win America, it likely wont be able to offset the difference in Europe+Japan+Rest of World

You forgot the other big factor, brand preference in most of the world. The brand preference for PS remains and isn't something MS can overcome in this generation. Which is why even if MS does everything right from here on their recovery Xb one still won't get close to PS4. it requires Sony do do something monumentally dumb, like introduce DRM mid generation, to ruin their reputation and open the way for Xb one (or Wii U) to come through.

There is much difference between PS3 and XB1:
PS3 was $200 more expensive than the X360
Blu-ray
It was as powerful as the X360 but the structure was complex for the developers
Better first party games
Released one year after the X360 (there was no real good game on PS3 in comparison to X360 in 2007)
Playstation brand is very popular worldwide
She dominated in Europe and Japan despite all these problems (which could be easily be solved)
