Forums - Sony Discussion - Questions about Destiny (PS4)

So....I'm honestly confused about this game, and I'm not sure if I want it. I'm thinking about buying a limited edition white PS4 bundled with this game. Figured VGC is the best place to ask around.

Answered Thanks

1. Does Destiny require PS+ to play? I've heard rumors that it doesn't.

2. Is there a subscription fee (like in MMO's?)

3. Is this an MMO? I hear there is a 32 mission story mode and for the most part I want this for the single player. However I might play a bit of online if it's free.

4. Can someone sum up what this game's about? Not plot-wise, but gameplay-wise. Is this going to be like Halo, or more like an MMO? How will most people play this game (e.g. finish the campaign and then play vs./firefight like in Halo or more WoW/MMO style of random quests?)

5. Does the PS3 version require PS+ to play online?

----

Summary - Halo + Borderlands = Destiny, PS+ required on PS4, but not PS3.

1. Destiny requires PS+ for any of the online features (co-op, pvp matches)

2. No

3. Not really

4. It's a large online connect first person shooter. Gameplay wise it is similar (at least from what I can tell from the beta) to Halo gameplay with big floaty-ish jumps and precise shooting. IT IS NOT AN MMO.

You can play however you want. You can do the campaign by yourself, with friends (online/offline), do co-op only, or play vs other players in crucible matches.

During the beta I played a lot of the pvp matches and it was basically a Call of Duty-like domination mode with three different flags.

The only real MMO aspects of the game is the leveling, but it's more RPG aspects rather than an MMO. You upgrade your character's skills (1 of 3 classes you can choose from) and it's actually a pretty in depth system.

Currently own:

  • Ps4

Currently playing: Witcher 3, Walking Dead S1/2, GTA5, Dying Light, Tomb Raider Remaster, MGS Ground Zeros

1. It seems that you can play without PS+, but only a story portion of the game, while co-op missions and PvP are behind PS+ paywall.

2. No monthly fee. There will be DLC expansions in the future.

3. It is MMOish, but nowhere in scope as PC players are used to. I think of it more as a massive co-op experience.

4. My opinion is that it's closest to Borderlands.

This pretty much answers your question, but in my opinion I wouldn't get the game if you aren't going to get PS Plus. The community aspect of the game is what makes it much more fun. Co-op and exploring the world with people is alot of fun and PvP isn't bad either. We were only able to play 1 of 5(?) gamemodes in the beta and it was great.

1. Yes for the multiplayer. No if you just want to play it by yourself.

2. Nope

3. Kind of? Bungie doesn't describe it as an MMO but it's very similar.

4. Best way I can describe it is a cross with Borderlands and Halo.

Sigs are dumb. And so are you!

There we go, that's the summary I needed. Going to hold off on the PS4, but not because this doesn't look awesome, just that I have no space on my TV stand and this isn't good enough to kick something else off.

One more question - Do I need PS+ to play PvP/co-op on PS3?

You don't need PS+ on PS3 for online play.

No required subscription fee. HOWEVER the DLC every 3 months (rumored to be 30 bucks) will essentially be a 9.99 a month sub if you buy every DLC, its better than a sub because at least you have a choice.

End of 2009 Predictions (Set, January 1st 2009)

360- 37 million   Should trend down slightly after 3rd year peak

PS3- 29 million  Sales should pick up next year, 3rd year peak and price cut

Sold - getting this on PS3.

It's just that I play online irregularly, and I don't like the idea of paying an extra $50 for 1 game for something I'll barely use. I'd rather just pay $70/$80 for a free online forever version, or get this on PS3 and keep my TV stand simple.

Also, the white PS4 is more than enough to you to buy the game xD

Meh, there will be another limited edition PS4. I've never had good luck with 1st gen consoles (PS1, PS2, and PS3 all broke on me. 360 was shipped out for repairs 11x). Nintendo and Sega though, and my PSP 3000, no problems

I have to get a PS4 in 2015 though, already pre-ordered Uncharted 4.
