Forums - Politics Discussion - What's Your View On Communism?

Personally, I like Communism. And there is no one true for of Communism, but Marxism is the starting point. Freedom of speech is possible under Communism (see Glasnost and Perestroika).

In theory it nice. But in reality it's everything but nice

The opposite extreme of capitalism.
Socialism is the humanitarian and best way for society to go imo.

People are too mean and greedy for it to ever work.

its been a long time that i read about it but from memory wasn't the original concept of communism designed to be operated by a developed country where the society got to a point they could treat everyone equal, and ot be run by a dictator.

The communism i grew up under is one where people got exploited, censored and told what to do. The only good thing was that everyone who was able had to work. Your pay may have been shit but at least you had money to provide food for the family.

Communism will never work for four simple reasons.

People are not perfect (nor do I think that such a thing as a perfect human exist)

People are vastly different from one another in a way a single system can adapt to.

A system so heavily reliant on violence will inevitably be rejected by people.

History shows that every communist system has been worse for lower, middle and upper class people. Only the ruling elite truly benefit from forced collectives.

Socialism is only possible through violence.

You advocate violence towards other people.

First thing's first "capitalism and democracy are not synonymous". That's a line by Immortal Technique from the amazing song -- Leaving the Past.

A democratic society can practice communism. To be honest I think a capitalist system with some socialist concepts mixed in works best -- Canada does this the best, but they're still not perfect. I feel citizens' tax dollars should go towards defense, amenities, social security, free healthcare, and free higher education.

Could you please stop saying free and be honest about what your saying.

You want to force some people to pay for other peoples government benefits, therefore advocating violence.

I believe society requires respect for people and property.

Therefore I reject communism as it does not.

Communism does not = dictatorship, but there is a connection there. As we have seen in several European countries, a large public service can lead to an unworkable society. In my own Canada I worked briefly for the Federal Government. At work I would frequently receive anti-Stephen Harper (the Conservative Prime Minister) propaganda because he was not considered pro-public service. He wasn't necessarily bad for workers, but the other parties are essentially controlled by public service unions such as teachers, nurses, etc. When this happens , the government can expand the public service to the point where it forms a large enough voting block that it can determine the outcome of elections. At this point you have effectively a public service ruling class that decides its own leader, who in turn decides the worker benefits and so on, in an endless cycle of eventual doom.

This is the fundamental problem of socialism, and in turn the problem with communism. It destroys democracy, and so it doesn't work, not in reality and not in theory, either.

There is a further problem with both systems in that forcing equality can reduce motivation. We all need a little competition.

That said, I'm a strong believer in a solid social support network for a "good" and "just" society. Fundamental needs such as food, shelter, health care and education should be provided to all and provided well. You just can't let the public service become the be-all and end-all of your society or you will lose democracy.

In theory the U.S. system should be the best, but it has fallen victim to several flaws, including the 2-party system, the right to bear arms, poor social funding of health and education, a rich ruling class, and the Military-Industrial Complex... but that's another topic, for another time.

The military-industrial complex is exactly one of those public service systems that got too big for it's own good and is influencing elections. Democracy is fundamentally flawed in that most people vote for what is good for themselves, not what is good for everybody. You see this with petitions in California. People will come out to vote yes or no on 1 subject, yet without a need to balance the budget it's a big problem for long term policies. Plus it is easily influenced by a rich ruling class and large corporations to sway the public vote. And voting on a 2 party system every 4 years is merely an illusion of Democracy, doesn't matter if it's communism or capitalism.

Democracy works because anyone can go into politics. However currently that's restricted by having the money to support and promote yourself. With Communism that could be more fairly regulated. It's never been that way though. Politics as jury duty might not be a bad idea, a long impartial educational process would be in order ofcourse.

As long as people stay addicted to competion instead of cooperation any sort of government will always have flaws.
