Oh really? Why don't you tell that to my Wii and Wii U which I wouldn't have bought if not for Pokemon.

You and your Wii/Wii-U do not represent even 10% of the gaming public. Pokemon didn't sell the Wii or Wii-U and has never been a home console seller.

Yup.. The most successful console Pokemon game was Pokemon Stadium with ~5.5 million sold and I don't think that game helped the N64 that much, now did it?

They will both live as long as Nintendo exists.

Here are three brief pros for each series.

Mario:

1. Is associated with Nintendo which has been making games for over 30 years.

2. Has a variety of high quality games not exclusive to platforming or consoles and maybe the reason why people buy Nintendo consoles in the first place.

3. Appeals to almost every demographic either as kiddy or a classic, retro gaming figure.

Pokemon:

1. Every main generation (excluding the third version and remakes) sell over 10 million over the past 15+ years

2. Has more merchandising power with amusement parks, movies, card games, and television shows.

3. Probably appeals more to children than Mario.

So which one do you think will live longer? I'm sure we'll see these two franchises being relevant in pop culture for a long time, but for how long?

Great comparison I'd say Mario though!

The real question is not which will last longer but how do you get Pikachu on to a bus?

mario in terms of years...

Switch!!!

What if the Mushroom kingdom is the next region for Pokemon to explore, and Mario turns out to be a pokemon?

Mario since it already has the age advantage and neither are going away until Nintendo goes away.

I don't think either will be done for anytime soon, but Mario will definitely last longer, if both wouldn't survive until Nintendo as a whole dies anyway.

Mario is Nintendo, and is one of the most recognized figures in popular culture. Meanwhile most people don't even know (outside people like us), that Pokémon is Nintendo's at all. That makes Mario much more valuable as an icon.
