Forums - Gaming Discussion - Gamestop to roll out a credit card with really high interest rate

I don't know why anyone would sign up for this. I can't believe gamestop is even attempting this, it makes me not want to shop at gamestop anymore. I get almost all of my games from them.

GameStop has a reputation of upselling customers at the cash register. As annoying as incessantly turning down pre-orders and protection plans can be, though, it's child's play compared to what the brick-and-mortar videogame retail giant is expected to start pushing soon.

GameStop is set to offer its own credit card to customers that ties directly into the company's PowerUp Rewards program, according to anonymous sources. We obtained photographs that outline the details of the card showing that the primary incentive for signing up is 5,000 bonus points for PowerUp Basic members and 15,000 bonus points for PowerUp Pro members. Also noted are exclusive offers to cardholders.

The finer (and more important) terms of the GameStop credit card is that it will come packaged with an interest rate of 26.99%. Currently, the market average seems to be in the neighborhood of 13%. It's worth noting that the more prominent marketing materials specify that there are "special financing offers," so there may be an introductory period during which there are significantly reduced rates.

It's unconfirmed at this time, but our sources were told that all PowerUp Rewards members are already pre-approved for the card. While it's unknown when GameStop intends to introduce this program, it's likely to be in the near future, given the fact that the marketing materials have already been created. Whenever it is, just make sure to proceed with caution -- tacking some bonus points onto your GameStop rewards account is an alluring prospect, but if you aren't confident in your financial situation, there are much more attractive credit cards with far fewer potential long-term repercussions.

Like any rewards card, if you pay it off as soon as you use it, you get nothing but benefits. If you don't have that kind of control over your money, then steer clear of it.

Makes sense, don't really see why people wouldn't like it. Lots of retailers have their own credit cards now. Don't like the high level of interest? Well then pay it off in time and it won't be a problem!

Yeah, mine could be 90% for all I know. Never come close to missing a payment.

If you have the money to pay it off then why use a credit card in the first place?

I don't think the benefits of using the gamestop card will be worth it. If you're a power up member you get points, the same points they will give you for using the credit card. Those points are worthless for the most part, to get anything worth value you must have like 20k+ points.

I agree with stearing clear, even if you do have control over your spending habbits.

Payments usually pay off interest. You only get no interest if you pay off your purchases in full.

I never miss payments so it could be higher for all I care. Especially for videogames I can't imagine having the lack of restraint that would lead me to buy them if I couldn't afford them.

yea i dont think gamestop points are worth it to farm by using a card and payng it off right away.. its not like its airmiles or earoplan points lol

I am Torgo, I take care of the place while the master is away.

"Hes the clown that makes the dark side fun.. Torgo!"

Yes. I pay in full every month.  I never spend money I do not have.

Credit card offers convience of not needing cash on hand or dealing with change.

It's not Gamestop's job to manage your money. There will probably be interest free financing on larger purchases. If you can afford it, buy it. If you plan on letting a purchase ride on your card, don't be a dumbass.

The interest rates of credit cards always scares people new to it. But it really doesn't matter as long as you pay your bills on time. Unlike with normal loans, the interest rate only applies if you are late on paying.
