Forums - Sony Discussion - A Destiny Impression from a relative gaming outsider

http://www.businessinsider.com/destiny-beta-preview-2014-7

I always like to read what the mainstream or non gaming press has to say about a game because I think it is a better indication of how successful or ill recieved a game will be by the mainstream (which whether core gamers like it or not determine whether or not a game is a success or not, at least thats the case for AAA games, smaller budget games can survive on core gamers, see Dark Souls)

The articles I have a read from non-gaming sites have been ridiculously positive. I posted one example. Feel free to add others.

End of 2009 Predictions (Set, January 1st 2009)

Wii- 72 million   3rd Year Peak, better slate of releases

360- 37 million   Should trend down slightly after 3rd year peak

PS3- 29 million  Sales should pick up next year, 3rd year peak and price cut

"I was a “Halo” fan, but “Destiny,” as my brother said to me, feels like Halo-plus. This is the kind of game you can't wait to run home to."

Great quote, these are the type of gamers that determine whether a game sell a few million or rises to the level of CoD.

Sounds like paid PR stuff, but the author is pretty much right when he said it feels like "Halo-plus." I only got to play a couple hours of the beta before the plug got pulled last night, but so far the game felt like Halo meets Mass Effect with some MMO sprinkled in for good measure.

A more accurate title for the game would've been World Of Halo. Or Halo Effect.

You know I was always wondering why no one ever used the dollar sign for $ony, but then I realized they have no money so it would be pointless.

Watch the youtube video he posted, he sounds like a giddy as hell playing, sounds like he was having the time of his life. If Bungie was paying for all this PR that might explain the 500 mil budget ; ), because there is a whole lot of it everywhere you go.

I know there has been a lot of mixed feedback about Destiny, but I tend to agree with you.

Destiny is an opportunity for gamers to really sink their teeth into a variety of shooters with distinctive features. So someone can play Halo and enjoy what it has to offer, whilst also enjoying the more MMO nature of Destiny.

I'm impressed by how many people seem to like this game and yet thought Halo was meh. Odd that.

This game is sooo like Halo in some respects. I don't think it is as good but it sure feels just like playing Halo occasionally, especially when the music kicks in and the fighting gets a little more frantic.

A bit of honesty from both "sides" wouldn't go amiss for a change.

It isn't better than Halo, it isn't necessarily worse than Halo, its just different.

I fail to see how you can love Destiny and think Halo is poor, or love Halo and think Destiny is poor.

To conclude, it isn't a Halo killer (nothing can be) but it will probably kill off other franchises.

I like Destiny (what I've seen so far) much more than Halo. The main reason is that RPG element, the second is the exploration. I've played Halo 3 and Reach, and made it to about halfway both times before I got bored and quit.

Destiny offers much more diversity than Halo or other similar shooters (Crysis, CoD, BF, Homefront...) which differ only in the setting and enemy skins, while pushing you along a straight line to point B. I liken Destiny much more to Borderlands, which I enjoyed immensely, and is one of my favorite games (part 2 not as much).

Only Borderlands had more humor and a fantastic cast of supporting characters, this is just a bit too robotic and too serious for my taste.

He does say he's a Halo fan, so maybe not the most balanced starting point...

But I found this paragraph particularly interesting
"This is no more apparent than in the story missions, where you always know exactly where you need to go and what you need to do thanks to subtle markers that show enemies and mission objectives. (Believe it or not, most games have trouble showing this information in a clear and concise manner)."

I didn't think I was alone in not being overly fond over the over the top handholding. It's not far from CoD's famous "FOLLOW" objectives

But I can't say I was overly impressed, the universe felt like a poor man's Mass Effect. Maybe it's my general dislike of online games, maybe it's my hesitancy to try to Halo devs, maybe it's my general indifference to FPS games, but it really didn't grab me

I'll wait a year and play the game of the year edition with my friend once he has a PS4. Or maybe I'll just be playing Star Citizen for my sci-fi fun if they ever get anywhere near finishing it

The universe doesn't hold a candle to Mass Effect. The gameplay doesn't hold a candle to Halo.

This is just PR journalism.

Not quite sure who this game is supposed to appeal to at the moment. Personally the beta failed to satiate my original hype, all its genre inspirations seem undercooked.

A minor example was all that time to hit level 2 to simply be able to use a grenade that runs on an rpg cooldown system. Boy did that throw me off. Not the best of first impressions, it didn't get much better as I progressed.

It is gorgeous though and the netcode is solid so I'll give it that at least.

Opinions.

The story aspect of Destiny is every buit as linear as a normal FPS imo. Its just dressed up in a faux MMO environment.  The fact that I can wander off mid campaign and re-do the EXACT same set pieces over and over doesnt alter the linearity of the campaign.  The same group of aliens spawn in exacly the same place at fairly predictable intervals.  Fot example in one of the challenges I simply skipped from one area to the other (very close together) repeatedly to get the "100 kills without dying", it was ridiculously predictable and easy.

I'll treat this like a FPS, finish the campaign, thoroughly enjoy it - no doubt.  Then I may play a round a little in the world, but I will be pretty much done.  This is how the vast majority will play the game imo.

Of course it's an opinion. My own personal opinion. I just wanted to clarify a few things, because you said you fail to see that anyone can like Destiny and dislike Halo.

As you see, it is possible. I even explained my opinion and my preferences. I didn't go into much detail, as to why I enjoy games with an RPG system more than straight up "here's the gun shoot everybody" games. You may not enjoy exploration and play it as a linear shooter, I will probably do the exact opposite, as I usually do - partake in missions when I've exhausted all other non-story options.

It is fantastic that developers offer us different options, so that everyone can enjoy games they prefer.
