I do believe PC gaming is huge there, which may limit the appeal of consoles, similar to the Korean gaming situation perhaps.

But in a country the size of China, with a pretty rapidly expanding middle class, I can't imagine the console market being smaller then Japan's. 20 million people (~1.5% of the population) buying consoles almost seems like a sure bet. And a 20 million console market is nothing to sneeze at. But by the same token a 20 million console market isn't likely to be a game changer in the global scheme of things.

I think 20 million is a little high.  Its a market that will need to gradually grow.  Mayb it will be a big market and maybe it wont, nobody can really predict that.  20 million however would be very large and def a game changr if you think a single console can pull that off.

America on average last Genration was 40 Million with Xbox 360 doing 47 Million, Wii with 45 Million and PS3 29 Million.

Europe on average was 30 Million with Wii doing 34 Million, PS3 with 33 Million, and X360 with 25 Million

Japan was 8 Million.  Wii with 13 Million, PS3 with 10, and X360 with 2

So if you expect China to do 20m on on console that would be huge.  Maybe they will but i would expect it to gradually grow and not be that large immediatly.  Hopefully im wrong though and it is that large.

It will be very interesting to see if either X1 or PS4 can get any traction in China. It is a market heavily flooded with piracy and PC seems to be the main choice for alot of people instead of consoles. Anything can change though.

100% correct!

and that is why Sony is concentrating on this:

Playstation TV is set to launch with a price point of around $102.00 USD

Andrew House, CEO of Sony Computer Entertainment, explains that Sony hopes to use the Vita TV to penetrate the Chinese gaming market, where video game consoles have previously been prohibited. The Vita TV was released in five other Southeast Asian countries and the special region of Hong Kong on January 16, 2014. At E3 2014, the system was announced for North America and Europe, under the name PlayStation TV, for release in Q3 2014.

.Price $102.00 USD

.Free 2 PLAY and Price friendly Gaming is very Big in china WHICH SONY IS NOT SHY OF FREE 2 PLAY SUPPORT

.Back Catalog is quit sizeable

.Cheaper to produce and Ship in china itself

.Already support's Unity3D even with PSM thus even Indie or small studios use such Engine

. Every Playstation TV is outright can be used to test your built Code prior to Publish

Sony has already released the Playstation TV is not only Japan , and Hong Kong but 6 other regions in Asia!

as for the uphill battle to get your software to pass the Govt. In China for inspection

take note:

In total, the investments from Sony Corp. into everything totals to roughly 1318.9 million RMB, which equates about $211.5 million dollars. The entire operation is going to enlist the talents of local game developers within China so that they can get an edge with exclusive content on Playstation platforms within the country, and to help promote growth within the Chinese video game industry.

That will most likely mean many existing Ports of Mobile Game's in china being ported over to the Playstation TV off the start, but should if the unit really takes off in Mainland China be much bigger software development by publishers and indie studios in China.

In My opinion Quite a few MMO's that are Mobile out of china may be getting ready to be ported to the unit.

Blimey, its a bigger flop than i thought, I assumed those low shipments were just for Japan.

oH' I WAS NOT Aware we have real solid tracking number's on a Playstation TV in those Regions! and it must be doing well enough to be releasing in more countries than what it started with, i mean did'nt pretty much everyone on here say that Japan was the test region? If it was shuch a freaking Flop than why is the retail chain stores still re ordering the unit even now, I mean even the PSPGo was pulled from retail so fast vs the PSVita but yet the PSVita and the Playstation TV are a flop?

LMAO..what ever man

and Since its such a big Flop there is no point in releasing the playstation TV in north america and europe this year, right?

oh' wait a min Sony is going to release that flop of a system in north america and europe..this year....LMAO

You and other's can keep painting the system as a flop all you like , that does not mean it is!

Just like the xboxone and the WiiU , people keep trying to paint those systems as flop systems that does not mean they are.

Oh but you and other's may say , well atleast the WiiU and the xboxone has bright prospect's ahead , the Vita does not..is that it? that must be it, because that is what many have been trying to imply for the past almost 3 years of the PSVita on the market, and just like the early years of the PS3 it still stuck in the market. Despite how many keep saying it was a flop, and a failure!

it has to compete with apple tv, fire tv, chromecast and even the "real" gaming consoles

apple tv (the most successful) is at only 20m ltd world wide since march 2007

Xbox expanding markets is the topic of this thread I think. I guess it rubs some people the wrong way.
I wonder if it will show what Chinese games will be bundled with it.

the number is ABOVE 20 million NOW in 7 years TIME for the Apple TV TO REACH THAT POINT

http://www.gearlive.com/news/article/apple-tv-surpasses-20-million-units-sold-q214/

And you do not think Sony will be able to compete with such a product?

That may in fact be true , but here is a big point since it is in direct comp. with said devices and the fact as Game console's the PS4 and the xboxone, the Price point in China of the xboxone and the PS4 are over $750.00+

While the Playstation TV is $102.00, and since the Unit is a Game Console 1st before Streaming Box, than its Geard toward the Console Market 1st before Streaming media Box market. Thus yes it does fill the media streaming Box role, but it is not its priority. its priority is that of a game console..be that as a Micro Game Console. Its Still a Game Console 1st before anything else.

the thread post already brought in what Sony was doing, so pointing out Sony's investment into china in this thread was not rubbing anyone the wrong way, it was just pointing out that while many seem to think its only  the XBOXONE VS THE PS4 in china its not as clear cust as that. The fact that the xbox360 and the PS3 infact along with the Wii and the WiiU along with mobile Game console's also can be released in such case also. And Since Hong Kong is also a Part of China now , so to be truthful Xboxone is not the first console to release past the ban.

I just wonder if the 499 yuan pre-order deposit is indicative of the rumored 4.999 yuan ($800) sales price?
Like that deal with China Telecom the other day, exclusive availability may be a hindrance, but also a possible advantage if they offer subscription plans.
Hopefully Microsoft will provide some numbers post-launch, this is a very interesting, unexplored market.

you are derailing.  drop it please.

Oh please even in the very 1st part of the thread you just had to underline a vs of what microsoft was going to do vs what Sony was going to do..but that's ok, i just pointed out what Sony was going to do..because you know you were the one who brought it up.In your very own thread.

Which may be true, THE XBOXONE MAY infact get a lower cost entry price point but that place holder price is most of the time pretty close or near the entry price point, sometimes though its way off, but in the case of the new systems i doubt its that far off. The deal in place is a good one for Microsoft no doubt in the free trade zone. They must have been working on the deal for a while now. Quite a bit of thing's take long with the govt. in china.
