Forums - Gaming Discussion - Opinion Thread: Under-rated RPG's?

Say this thread http://gamrconnect.vgchartz.com/thread.php?id=187431&page=1 had to make this one.

For me:

Final Fantasy II - Yes a NES FF game, has a much more interesting plot then many of the later entries, especially the post-game.

Fire Emblem: Mystery of the Emblem - Didn't localize, but a patch is available. Remake of FE3 for SNES, but introduces a lot of game mechanics which people hail Awakening for (like Casual mode). Not as good as Awakening, but up there.

Front Mission - Best SRPG of them all, strong and unique plot.

Lost Odyssey - Gets some love, but deserves more. This is what FF should be.

Idk if these games counts as RPGs (they're probably ARPGs), but I always thought Dragon Ball Z: The Legacy Of Goku 2 and Dragon Ball Z: Buu's Fury for the GBA were extremely underappreciated. It's not often you get games with really fun RPG mechanics, The story of the DBZ anime (Android/Cell Saga for LOG2, Buu Saga for BF), and the freaking amazing soundtrack of the English dubbed Anime extremely well converted into the GBA's awesome sound engine. I keep replaying these games even though most people don't know about their existence...

I have to say, I was really surprised at how involved the story was in FF2. I was expecting it to be a generic FF1 plot but it actually delivered a half decent story.

And I agree with Mystery of the Emblem, that game was a great improvement over Shadow Dragon.

OT: Honestly, I'll have to say Suikoden. Not sure if a lot of people have played the game but I had a blast with it. Other games would include Arc the Lad 2, SMT: Devil Summoner Soul Hackers, Dragon Quest 6. Also I think Chrono Cross is an interesting case. That game came out with excellent reception to it but over the years, there are Trigger fans that hate Cross but personally, I absolutely love it.

@Sin: Suikoden is a great series. Definitely under-underrated.

Secret of Mana. Loved by old school fans but SE has dragged the name through a $10 hookers bedsheets too many times for it to even be recognized by new gamers. You'd be lucky to know anyone who remembers the Mana series once showed great promise.

I recently bought Suikoden II. I played a lot of PS1 JRPG's, but shamefully must admit never to beat one. Played a most of FFVII and a bit of XenoGears/Chrono Cross, I'm really looking forward to having some spare time to beat these gems.

Howver can you really say any of these are under-rated? Never heard a single bad thing about Suikoden and Chrono Cross (just that Trigger fans prefer tigger).

P.S. YEs Chrono Trigger is my favorite JRPG, and I have yet to get into Cross (but from what I have played I loved it)

Baten Kaitos. Battle system, graphics, sound, atmosphere, story. Everything was amazing about those games. Sold terribly, but think how well it would work on WiiU! I hope that's what Monolith has planned for after Xenoblade X

I kinda agree here, never played a Card-RPG like this before. I never beat Baten Kaitos because of the damn fetch quest for strong weapos at the end of the game, but it's always bugged me.

Were those mandatory? I don't remember doing them. I remember having a looot of trouble with the last boss though. Could be why. I was litterally like, "Welp this my very last attack and if this doesn't magically kill him I'll have to start this 45+ minute battle all over again.... HOLY SHIT!" It was one of my finest moments.

Baten Kaitos!! Really enjoyed it despite its flaws. I still pray for them to be on Virtual Console so I can finally play the Baten Kaitos Origins.

Origins was amazing too! There was a huge plot twist that completely turned the first games story on its head. I've been so jaded by RPG plot twists, and even I didn't see it coming.
