The story to X has some of the biggest plot holes you can imagine. The story is crap - terrible writing and pacing. The entire game's story wants to be about Tidus but is clearly about Yuna. Rikku started the "playable for fan service only" trend in Final Fantasy. She has zero impact on the story. Did I mention the story is rubbish? Are you seriously going to say the Sphere Grid is a good leveling system? It's one of the worst in FF history, right behind FFXIII's. It's overly complicated and time consuming beyond it's worth. To be fair the battle system gets credit, it is good. Personally I don't remember a single track from X. But everything else - annoying and unlikable characters, horrible character design and weapons, TIDUS and those fucking temples with the obnoxious, monotonous "puzzles" - is complete and total garbage. |
Rikku has zero impact on the story? What about her relationship with Yuna vs the traditional Yevon hating the Al-Behd and the conflict that causes for Wakka. As well as feeding in to the hypocrasy of the church theme that the game is so fond of
I love the sphere grid. It's barely time consuming and I like to know what I'm getting when I level up. it makes each level feel more impactful when they're so discreet. I also love the way that it gives you guidance for each character's role and then the blank (and pointless) slate that is Kimhari. He has loads of different directions to go to, giving you a chance to change things up if you want. It also adds an extra dimension in that their paths only last so long. Before the end of the story, you should have been able to finish the paths of at least your favourite characters, then you get choices of what to give to them
The sphere grid and its customisable nature also tie into the fantastic party system. Too often in games you have party members who just sit on the sidelines doing nothing, because you don't like them at first, so they never get integrated into your party since they don't level. Whereas here, you have to play with all of them, but can phase them out as you focus on certain individuals and give them others' powers
The battle system is just fantastic, I love turn based RPGs, but the "length of attack" feature just adds an extra dimension and gives a much more tactical feel than anything closer to an active system like the older FF games used.
I honestly can't understand how you can remember any of the song. But I guess that's up to you
The puzzles were a bit weird, but better than just walking forever. You always need something to change up the pace
Okay, you don't like the character models, but that's really just a personal preference
Maybe it's because it was my first jRPG, but I really love this game. I mean really love this game. When I'm bored, i can just sit back and hum some of the songs and instantly feel a lot better just thinking about the game. There are "better" games, like the Last of Us, but to me this had something special that really clicked with me. I even liked Blitzball! (though maybe not all 30 hours I spent on it...)
