Forums - Gaming Discussion - Opinion Thread: Overrated RPGs?

Hey guys, what are some beloved RPGs that you think are overrated?

My list would have to include:

- Kingdom Hearts 2

- Final Fantasy 4

- Fire Emblem: Radiant Dawn

- Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim

- Earthbound

Honestly? Fable 2. I ended up enjoying it in the end, but when I first planned on purchasing it (never having played the first one,) I had in my mind dreams of Oblivion-esque exploration, wandering a vast land all bright-eyed and bushy tailed. What I got just felt a lot... narrower. Simpler. x.X Still fun, once I stopped wishing it was something else, but nonetheless, ranks as one of my least favorite RPGs, though one of my more favored hack-n-slasher beat-em-ups.

Zanten, Doer Of The Things

Unless He Forgets In Which Case Zanten, Forgetter Of The Things

Or He Procrascinates, In Which Case Zanten, Doer Of The Things Later

Or It Involves Moving Furniture, in Which Case Zanten, F*** You.

Pokemon. at least to me it is. i can see what all the fuss was about 10 years ago. but now its just tedious

Pokemon.

Xenoblade Xenoblade Xenoblade!

I'd agree with Kingdom Hearts and Skyrim. Probably Mass Effect as well.

Fire Emblem: Radiant Dawn? I thought that was the most "hated" Fire Emblem game. I would put Awakening as my choice for a Fire Emblem game really.

Other RPGs would be:

Mass Effect 2
Mother 3
Final Fantasy VI and IX

Interesting, never played a Fable game but I usually hear that Fable 2 is the best one. However, I hear mixed opinions on the original.

I've always thought FFX/X-2 are both overrated, they just didn't stick with me.

Is it? I usually hear fans loving FE: RD because of how epic it is, which I agree with to an extent but I think the plot was just a mess.

It WAS a good game, I haven't played the first or third so can't compare, I think a lot of my opinion is from, again, the kind of expectations I had about an RPG. The sense of adventure, the interaction with other characters, etc, etc, and once I got past all those hopes I did end up enjoying what it had to offer, (I found the combat very satisfying,) but even so... I don't know, just seems like it was kind of an effort to 'Mainstream' RPGs, by taking out a lot of the more complex mechanics, and simplifying its elements. Again, wholly my opinion, of course.
