Forums - Sony Discussion - The 30 FPS Lock in The Last of Us Remastered Enables ‘Higher-Quality Shadows In-Game’

i knew this shit were fake

Alright all... rewind a little. (also why does this always happen when I'm not on a PC but on my phone?)

Improved shadows in 30 are added as part of the patch. As we were finishing up the day 1 patch we were looking at the game and released at 30 we had extra cycles we could do some further, unplanned, graphics enhancements - and that turned out to me shadows. Naughty Dog being Naughty Dog - we couldn't let idle rendering cycles stay that way! :)

Shadows at 60 are absolutely improved over the PS3 version and the game just looks and runs best at 60. The improved shadows at 30 are a nice bonus - but seriously, not reason enough to play at 30 unless you already needed or planned to lock it... well, it does help a little when you are in Photo Mode, but you can enable that at last minute.

Stick to 60 unless you have to or really do prefer 30. that's why 60 is the default!

Player shadows are often a much higher quality than those in the environment (which i expect is the area these shadow upgrades would be targeting). Objects with baked lighting are often an obvious exception, but the same can't be said for anything dynamically generated or animated.

To use FF14 as an example (since i'm waiting for the Duty Finder in it right now lol...):

Lowest shadow setting:

Highest (4x quality over the lowest):

The character does benefit from the higher quality shadows, but not nearly to the extent the environment does.

That's quite funny. The upper screen's shadows, while less detailed, actually look more realistic.

Just got back from N4G, ignorant trolls are out in full force there lmao

I wish they improved 30fps mode even further, but if its just shadows ill stick to 60fps

Why would anybody give up 60fps for better shadows, I don't understand...

I agree With the soft shadow setting on (which i do in both), the LQ shadows become smooth enough that they look pretty realistic. Sadly, it doesn't translate as well into motion:

The worst thing about LQ shadows is how they look from a distance though. Their lower LOD versions ain't pretty '_'

Would be nice if the soft shadow setting was more aggressive with HQ shadows though. Get the best of both world.

is this true? i saw the livestream with that guy that already has the copy of the game, and i didn't see any difference when he disabled the "30fps lock"

right now there is no difference.

ND said that they improved more the shadows on 30fps option cuz they can.

it will available with day one patch. give options is a bad thing now

anyway u know how some people on internet react.

and most of them dont own ps4 go figure.
