Forums - Gaming Discussion - Digital Foundry: Destiny BETA Xbox One vs. Playstation 4

Technical analysis of the Destiny beta!

"Put side-by-side, the Xbox One produces slightly fuzzier detailing on these elements, though the actual quality of textures - and filtering - is a complete match between the two."

"Destiny's beta campaign missions show a rock-solid, v-synced 30fps on both PS4 and Xbox One. Even in the hectic multiplayer mode, as appended to the end of this video, the engine runs perfectly."

"The only bug-bear is the 900p versus 1080p differential, where the PS4 benefits from a clearer image. However, based on footage released of the 1080p Xbox One build so far, this is to be corrected with no apparent sacrifices to visuals elsewhere. Where performance is concerned, we'll have to see nearer release whether this 1080p playback is achieved with no impact to the game's smooth, consistent frame-rate."

"All in all, it's a very encouraging scenario. Both next-gen consoles run at the same levels of world detail in this early build, with Xbox One also a match for the PS4's stable frame-rate."

So, what's surprising here is that there are no crushed blacks to see and they are not mentioned in the analysis. Makes someone wonder how the screencaps were done in this thread:http://gamrconnect.vgchartz.com/thread.php?id=187389

Funny quotes from other threads (without usernames, of course):

"Textures look a lot muddier on the Xbox One, there's also the issue of AA and Anisotropic Filtering lacking on the Xbox One.
Colors look more vibrant on the PS4 version and the image quality seems a lot better, OVERALL, on PS4.
PS4's superior hardware and performance is evident, even on a crossplatform game released also for PS360.
Frame rate also appers far more stable in the PS4 version. You will see when the Final Game is released !"

"And expect on Launch PS4 version > One version too ;) and not by a small margin..."

"

If someone were to give me any version to play, I couldn't even tell which one it was. The fact that people have to dissect these pictures says everything. People playing on the Xbox One will have the exact same experience as PS4 users.

huh? what are you talking about. Differences are apperant at first glace."

"Of course PS4 version will look better and it will be the best version, PS4 has superior hardware."

"Yet again, gamma is totally fucked on the Xbox One. It has been 9 years Microsoft, fix it!"

"I'm going to be fascinated to see a comparison of the two games when it isn't upscaled (which causes the high contrast/crushing) on the XB1 and it runs at a native 1080p. This inability to see something that's clearly visible simply because it doesn't fit a 'needed' narrative is pretty damned scary when you think about it."

"Such petty differences...PS4 has more detail where the XBO is super dark but it also doesn't seem to have as much shadow depth as you'd expect in some spots."

"Surprise. The PS4 version looks better. Who would have guessed? Open them in full res if you want to see the true difference. The small pictures don't show much detail."

Both fantastic.

LOL and people wonder why the power discussion wont go away..not every game will stress the systems as much as some others. Whats your point? Destiny is an Ok not great looking cross gen title. What will you say when witcher 3, or others come out looking worse on x1?? Unless destiny ships with a better GOU and faster ram the x1 is weaker..period.

Bungie went for parity on a cross gen game..who cares.

The game looks nearly the same on ps3 for gods sakes. It's not a pretty game.

It's not a particularly pretty game but at least it runs well... on both current gen consoles?

Destiny could have/should have been 1080p/60fps on PS4. Bungie went for parity, 'nuff said.

What makes you think they could have acheived that? Even Infamous couldn't acheive that. I think some people overestimate the PS4, it's nowhere near as powerful as people seem to think.

How can you even remotely say it could've run 1080p60 on PS4? Do you know their code? Their technical details? Anything? No? Oh, guessed that.

Just as it wasnt fair for the Comparison to be made in favor of the PS4 ver having higher res per release, its not fair for this comparison saying the XB1 ver is a rock solid 30fps without it being in 1080p closer to release.
