Forums - Gaming Discussion - Why are constant firmware updates a thing?

I for one never understood why people complained about updates last gen. Most of us want new features and better stability, the rest of you can just live in the stone age...

No qualms with them. They're trying to keep hackers and their ilk out of their products, no issue with that. Although, ironically, Sony has a lot of them on PS3(not sure about 4 and Vita) and the thing still got hacked.

"You should be banned. Youre clearly flaming the president and even his brother who you know nothing about. Dont be such a partisan hack"

I do not mind.

It can only benefit users as they tweak aspects of the UI and add features.

"We'll toss the dice however they fall,
And snuggle the girls be they short or tall,
Then follow young Mat whenever he calls,
To dance with Jak o' the Shadows."

I don't know why people are so bothered with the updates. They have a right to be, of course, but it is so minuscule that in the time you talk about them, they can be downloaded and installed. Not to mention that PS consoles have a feature in which you can let the machine download it while you are not playing (no idea about the others, but I guess it is similar). The update may come while you are playing of course, but the chances are slim.

I remember the Wii U launch, everyone was complaining about the day one update for days, yet all it took was like 5 hours if I remember correctly. 5 hours of waiting for a device you'll be using for the next five years.

Because consoles are much more complex than they ever were before, and thus need much more coding. To fix inevitable errors in the coding, there are updates.

Sometimes it can be a pain in the ass, since every used game I buy has like 2-3 updates waiting and my slow connection doesn't do any favors. Still, it's a necessary evil. I remember nearly 10 years ago, I rented 25 to Life (awful game), and the cutscenes didn't have any audio at all. It was annoying. While games nowadays won't suffer of extreme cases like that, it doesn't hurt to iron out the few glitches that slipped from the developers eyes before release. Also, adding content via updates never hurts anyone. Background downloads on this generation nearly eliminates the issue, so, it's not much of a problem anymore.

Dunno but i wish they weren't
at most seasonal (spring summer fall winter)
more than that is just annoying

Companies want to have a better connection with their consumers and gamers and they try to do it with asking what gamers want, Phil spencer is asking frequently what gamers want in the next updates and some things have been added.

Also I enjoy dark souls and the community is very vocal about their issues or what they would like to see to change in the game 'Op weapons/bugs' for example and those get changed in the update...

Gamers/consumer will feel more respect for the company for doing it.

Look to BF 4, it has become one of the most hated games because gamers are asking for updates and EA has been pretty bad listening to their fans...

The X1 console updates on its own when in standby mode. You can also now decline an update if you want to continue playing etc.

The PS4 states it updates in standby.. mine has yet to do it that way.

This is how both systems should be.. Update without knowing it happened.. unless its just a popup saying what changes were made.. but NO waiting 10-20 minutes to finish the update..
