Forums - Sales Discussion - This new found certainty of Nintendo fans that the Wii U will end up 2. is kinda unfounded

Do you think the Wii U will finish second this gen?

Yes 313 58.07%

No 165 30.61%

Results 60 11.13%

Total:538

And it also to a degree reminds me of last gens 360 vs PS3, where PS3 fans would constantly point out how launches aligned the PS3 was always ahead.

This is also and to a much clearer degree the case with the Wii U vs X1, just look at it:

  Wii U Xbox One
07.13.2013/07.12.2014 3,248,267 4,906,728

It's not even close.

In the first half of 2014 the X1 has outsold the first half of 2013 for the Wii U by about 2 to 1 and now people jump to the conclusions that the Wii U will be second because the Wii U (second year) is slightly outselling the X1 (first year) for a couple weeks, while still being clearly behind overall even in 2014?

Come on, I think we should know better than that.

Ok, so the XB1 will sell more now...?

Yeah but that was the time before the Nintendo E3 and the MK8 so yeah will see because it's on now......

man xbox one and wii u looks like a scavenger against PS4

Right now it looks like U will outsell One because it is a better value proposition -- I don't really care about the sales to date. Essentially, there is very little reason to buy a One over a 4. Most consumers will choose the 4 since it's the superior product given that the libraries are almost identical. However, the U offers a different product at a lower price with a different library. Some consumers will choose this option instead of a 4 or perhaps in addition to their 4. This is a broad generalization and One is going to sell some systems, but I think in the grand scheme it will hold true for now.

This could all change dramatically with new product, services or marketing and One could be on top of the industry by next year.

That was before E3, think of the bigger picture. Think of all those tiles in early 2015.

Think of Holidays. Wii U CAN stay in second.

I also noticed your ussually against Nintendo but whatever. The Wii U has a NEW BASELINE of 60K+, which would likely increase by the Holidays.

I am not saying it WILL stay second, I am saying that it actually CAN.

Wii U is going through it`s best phase so far (out of holidays), but XB1 isn`t doing that bad. Yes, it`s not doing as well as the PS4, but by itself it has been doing well for a product that up until recently was selling for 500$ and started with a really bad reputation.

All things considered, it`s too early to tell how things will end.
Last generation, in 2007/8, Wii was going for undisputed dominance and PS3 would end up dead last. But somehow things changed.
Wii U could end up doing even better than expected and XB1 might end up having the better games in the years to come, thus, coming out as the better consoles for the best games.

m$ will not buy so much exclusives to beat nintendo.

I'd hold off on claiming the new Wii U baseline until after the free game offer with the purchase of MK8 expires next week. Plus, there are some big games on the horizon that will boost both PS4 and X1.

The X1 / Wii U alignment illustrates how Nintendo screwed up their marketing from day 1. Week for week, X1 has sold more than Wii U since their respective launches, and has been steadily closing the gap on Wii U's life-to-date sales until recently.

That said, there is every possibility that the Wii U can compete with the X1 towards the end of the gen.

It`s not a question of how many, but how great they are.

Nintendo has already a really good line-up for 2015 but it doesn`t have - at least, so far - games like Halo or Gears of War. And those are the games that gamers seem to want now.
