His issue with the ads is that these are ads that should be displayed if you went into the XBox store. On PS4 you get ads like these too, but only when you choose to go into the Playstation store. They are not shoved in your face on your home screen. The exception is if I were to load up Watchdogs and hovered over my game icon for the title, it will show underneath some of the available DLC.
When you first turn on your PS4 the only thing thrown in your face is your games and other apps you downloaded. Your content is the main focus.
It is like that on PS4, WiiU, iPhone, Android, etc... The ads for movies, games, apps, etc... are all rightfully thrown at you when you enter that devices shop.
By the way, if the console is displaying a title for a game you do not own and shows it is on sale or that it might be the kind of game you like, it is an ad. Just because the content of that advertisement is games doesn't change from the fact that it is an advertisement. They are trying to get you to buy something, which is an ads purpose.
