Thanks jlmurph!

Wow. What's the point in even sending them warning letters?!

If they know who you are and that you are doing something like sharing music/films, the companies that own the copyright to those mediums can sue you. No jail but maybe bankruptcy isn't a great prospect.

Hmm, pie.

In the hope that some start to pay for stuff out of guilt.... yeah, cuz that will work

Lol. Seems like a silly law though. And the movie and video game companies are not gonna accept this.

Judging from the OP it's most likely to inform parents what their kids are doing.

It was about time that UK joined in. It is already legal in many countries in Europe, and this is a huge victory for all consumers.

I wonder how this will play out. Sites like megaupload got shut down by America, but now if sites like that are run from the UK they should be fine to just keep sharing stuff. Wouldn't even need to attempt to look legit.

This is not the same as Megaupload and such... It is to protect consumers, as EU copyright laws, which UK is conforming to here, say that you can share anything you want as much as you want, as long as you are not charging for it and profiting of it.

Megaupload paid money to uploaders depending on the traffic, they will still be illegal everywhere.

Ah, so they will only allow it as long as there is no money involved? That makes sense I suppose.

Yes, this similar law is in effect in Croatia for 4-5 years already. They don't even send letters or e-mails.

Basically, you can download and upload whatever you want if no money is involved. The deal has been struck with the copyright holders in a way that every recordable media (CD, DVD, USB, HDD etc.) is taxed at the register an extra percent, which is then distributed to our version of RIAA/MPAA.

Hmmm piracy, I feel they are going about this all wrong. I can think of really simple ways to monetize game/movie piracy. No clue on how to deal with music piracy though.

But i think the solution is so obvious that I can't understand why they haven't done it yet.
