I'm glad Nintendo hasn't taken this way of doing things

Nintendo games mostly are not Full HD assets games with complex world designs which needs a lot of space.

Skyrim is a huge game with an open world. Release verieon was around 4 Gb, I think?

Skyrim reuses many assets. Developers build new areas using same resources again and again.

people thinking this is going to be all that common? sigh
tlou remastered is 50gb because it has at least 1 hour, maybe more, of pre-rendered cutscenes at 1080p/60fps
that's probably 20gb or more right there
games that don't use those will be smaller
U4 supposedly won't have them, this being smaller

Prediction: Final Fantasy XV will surpass 100Gb

Depends on compression

TLOU cutscenes are supposed to look as close to gameplay as possible, a bit different than the usual FF CGI.  But yeah it'll probably be huge that one, unless they ditch pre-rendered

I was considering getting the digital version but now I think i'll go physical...

As others have said, this is the physical install. Although, since all PS4 games get installed on the HDD, it's not like it matters.

Why do they do that? We should have the option to just play it off the disc...

Because it creates a best possible experience from a loading perspective. It's takes a less than a minute to play from putting the disc in, I don't see how it's a problem. Anyone complaining hasn't actually deleted or installed a game on a PS4. It's all pretty seamless and you wouldn't be able to tell unless someone told you it was installing information.

They said they were moving to using ingame for as many cutscenes as possible, so that they could keep them interactive and seamless. So it might even end up being smaller. Especially with the cost of producing the quality of CGI they do these days, I am sure they will do only a handful of CGI scenes.

Anyone else miss the days of most games being 8 gigs or less? :P

Xbox: Best hardware, Game Pass best value, best BC, more 1st party genres and multiplayer titles.

That was only because X360 used DVDs so developers had to accomodate them. I'd rather have more bytes at the same price. Increase in visual fidelity is noticeable.

Is this due to uncompressed audio, or the cutscenes, I wonder?

Thats basically it. On the PS3 their games rendered their cutscenes in engine and saved them in HQ HD for playback while playing the game to hide loading screens. Hence, the cutscenes always looked better than the actual game. On the PS4, even though the entire game runs at a fidelity higher than the cutscenes on the PS3, they are still storing those cutscenes as videos cause the engine was built around that process.

They have said they won't be doing that with uncharted 4 though. Basically any game that has lots of video content, even if its in-engine would eat up tons of space.
