$499 US Dollars

The Xbox "One-Eighty"

WTF!

Gamewise Xbox One had by far the best first year of all the next gen consoles out there and there last 2 E3 conferences were just game after game after game.

PS4 is lacking games for its first year and the launch games were not huge either. So far there are 3 exclusive AAA games and one of them is Knack.
WiiUs first year was just a bloody mess.

Real reasons:

1st) Sony hit that $399 pricepoint way before MS.

2nd) Sony outspends MS for advertisement in a HUGE way...in the US.

Through the end of May 2014, Sony had spent $59M to Microsoft’s $34.7M. Sony spent the most on networks like FOX, FOX Sports, Comedy Central, ESPN and TNT.

3rd) Don Mattrick just got crazy during his last days at MS and fucked up. The bad part was not the DRM, it was the way they sold it. #dealwithit on twitter and support questions on Twitter became corporate statements, because nobody had a clue wtf was going on. I still think DRM with streaming games or sharing games offer some cool new features and I am buying 90% of my games digitally anyway. (Steam and XBL)

4th) Sonys marketing in Europe is just massive. Just to give you an idea: Sony is the main sponsor of the UEFA Champions League with their Playstation brand, but neither Sony nor the UEFA publish details on that partnership. Nissan is another main sponsor and pays up to $75 million per Season and I doubt Sony would pay much less. "Playstation" is a main sponsor since 1997.

5th) WiiU just got its Mario Kart.

I watch alot of FX and Comedy Central, all that i ever see are XBOX One commercials.

I don't think it was a lot of X360 fans. From my point of view PS3 and X360 was basically the same machine. Most of the games were multi and more or less the same. So when I was deciding what to buy real question for me was the exclusive games. It was basically a choice between Uncharteds and Halos/GoW. For me it was X360, but not because I'm a fan. In fact choice could very much be different.

Now this generation if I'd need to buy a nextgen machine I'd easily chose Ps4. Its cheaper has better multi and some great exclusives ahead. The only ex I'm interested on X1 now is Halo 5 (mostly not for me but for my son, he loves playing Halo).

But in fact now for me best choice is a WiiU for Nintendo exclusives and a PC for multiplatform games (I'm not playing that much recently). And portable library of 3DS satisfies me too.

It's the power of MK8 and Luigi's Death Stare, man!

Comedy central was on the list of people MS was giving advertising dollars to so hes not wrong there. Also, the author who wrote the article he provided admitted that Sony's marketing budget couldn't be the a great reason why Sony is beating Microsoft.

people should be loyal just to themselves...

I also think PSV will be the last Sony handheld

I can see that being true.

Their domination in the home console market is where they will stay, and i dont see Microsoft expanding in to handheld gaming after this generation, even their tablets are struggling a little bit.

Current Game Machines: 3DS, Wii U, PC.

Currently Playing: X-Com(PC), Smash Bros(WiiU), Banner Saga(PC), Guild Wars 2(PC), Project X Zone(3DS), Luigis Mansion 2(3DS), DayZ(PC)

I want to address some of the things in said the OP that I think are somewhat inaccurate.

1.I don't think a lot of 360 owners were owners of PS2s or PS1s. There are lot of people who started as Xbox OG owners and continued on to the 360 and now the One.

2.I hesitate to call any of the current consoles a 'failure' yet. I think Xbox One is isn't selling what Microsoft wants it to sell, however that said Its doing better than the 360 at this point in its life. You could argue that the Xbox brand is overall failure since its creation since it loses money for Microsoft.

A lot of 360 owners flocked to PlayStation 4. Microsoft pissed off a lot of Xbox loyalists last year just like how Sony pissed off a lot of PlayStation loyalists with PS3 causing them to flock to Xbox 360 and just like how Sega pissed off Sega loyalists with the Saturn causing them to flock to PlayStation.

It's definitely an interesting analysis but the part I argued you didn't address. What happens to the regional discrepancies, they poke big holes in your theory.

Just analyze US for example.

You didnt find any holes in my theory. I agreed with you that MS took a chunk out of the N64's marketshare, but you still got the numbers wrong and it had nothing to do with Rare. Rare was purchased by MS a year after Halo came out and Rare had completed their final game for Nintendo in the same year of the purchase. When the Stamper Brothers left Rare they left the name and the IP's but the heart and soul of Rare was truly gone and the key developers in Rare who created Goldeneye left to Free Radical which is why Timesplitters plays so close to Goldeneye. Of course once Halo came out people werent really impressed, but the GC and PS2 at least had  decent shooter. If MS had an ounce of creativity Rare would still be a thriving company today, but no...they are second rate now. No direction at all.

As for these points...

"Related is the fact that the sales for the twins in the US exceeded by far the sales of the PS2:

PosPlatformNorth AmericaEuropeJapanRest of WorldGlobal
1 PlayStation 2 (PS2) 53.65 55.28 23.18 25.57 157.68
6 PlayStation 3 (PS3) 28.56 32.98 10.05 11.39 82.98
7 Xbox 360 (X360) 47.25 25.23 1.66 8.45 82.59

twins total in US = 76M vs 53.65M for PS2."

1) You never read what I wrote properly. I attributed almost half of Sony's marketshare loss to Microsoft since the numbers came up to that. The last bit went to the Nintendo Wii.

2) Japan's interest in the console market is dwindling. They are mainly focused on handhelds

As for this...

"Another thing, the latest argument for TLOU:R is that many PS4 fans don't own PS3s. If that's true, then it seems like there is a lot more movement than we like to think. Some start gaming, some stop, we really have no idea what happens to owners between gens."

That is true for any console. Only a portion of the crowd buys the exclusives. Rarely is it ever at extremely high percentages attached to console sales like the Wii Sports bundles. Wii Sports was the game every non-gamer and their grandmother wanted to play.

Look at my post that I wrote to Padib. MS took well over 50 million gamers from Sony. There were only 24 million Xbox owners. They contributed little to nothing to the overall growth of the industry. I have the numbers all there.
